The Fragments of Aethyrim A World of Shattered Dreams

Created by

Before the foundation of the world, there was the Void Above. First to appear in the Void were the eggs of the Celestial Dragons. As they grew within their shells, those empyrean serpents dreamed, and their dreams created the myriad worlds of the cosmos.

Our world was dreamed into being by the Dragon Aethyr. From each of his deepest reveries, ten unique races sprang up, fully formed, upon the outer surface of his shell. As the ages passed and those civilizations grew, Aeythr's dreams became troubled. The oracles of many nations began to prophesy that Aethyr’s dreams would soon end.

As it was prophesied, so it came to pass. Aethyr woke from his slumber. The shell that formed the foundations of our world was shattered as Aethyr hatched from his egg and ascended into the heavens.

As he left us behind, Aethyr chose paragons from each race and imbued them with the power to fulfill his will; they became known as the Incarnates. Each Incarnate claimed a portion of Aethyr’s destroyed shell. Once established, they gathered their people to their new homes – some more willingly than others.

One fragment, called Òd, served as the crossroads between the other parts of Aethyr’s shell. During its prime, many of Òd’s inventors, wizards, and philosophers created worlds-altering technomantic marvels. These advances spread to people all across the fragments of Aethyr’s shell, birthing a utopian age known as the Òddian Idyll.

Conventional wisdom teaches that "all good things must come to an end." The perfection of the Idyll was reaching full bloom even as the stage was set for its annihilation.

Some tales claim that the Idyll was shattered by the hubris of archmages who reached for uncontrollable power. Some say the heedless experiments of scientific minds twisted nature until it fractured. Others say the Incarnates, angered by the people’s growing arrogance, visited merciless retribution upon Òd.

Whatever the truth, the Òd Fragment has begun to wither under the burden of these horrific days. The land buckles and warps. Elemental magic runs wild. Many powerful city-states have been wiped from the face of Òd. Those of us who remain must attempt to reclaim life amidst chaos and destruction.

The Idyll is not forgotten. We lived through its glory and deeply mourn its loss. Now, desperate adventurers wander through ruins looking for answers about the cause of the Devastation. Others fight to carve out sanctuaries to stand against the dangers of a world in chaos.
