Abythos Geographic Location in The Fourth Age of Tel | World Anvil

Abythos

A dimension of never-ending emptiness and perpetual darkness, Abythos is home to a multitude of demonic entities and evil deities. A shared belief in the mythologies of the various cultures indigenous to the coasts of the Central Sea is that the entrance to Abythos could be found at the lowest point on the seafloor of that body of water.

Geography

Abythos is an infinite void of darkness with the only solid ground consisting of isolated pockets of rock and soil that float in space. The void is filled with a breathable atmosphere, albeit cold and harsh on the lungs of all but the most hardy beings. The cries of the imprisoned Leviathans manifest as the violent winds that blow through the void with great alacrity. The various fiends that occupy Abythos constantly war with one another over control over the small islands of obsidian and other igneous rock that make up the floating small archipelago realms that wander through the empty nothingness of this dimension.

Localized Phenomena

All realms within the dimension of Abythos are cloaked within permanent darkness. No form of illumination, either natural or magical, is possible within its borders. While beings capable of darkvision (e.g., Gnomi and Nanoi) are able to see in this dimension, those who only possess natural sight will experience the terror of infinite, unyeilding darkness.

History

Abythos was created at the end of the Second Age of Tel to imprison the Leviathans that made war upon the gods. Completely cut off from the light of The Ar, the titanic beasts fill the emptiness with the wails of their fury and agony. As judge of the Ouranic afterlife, Ator also condemns the souls of the unlawful to eternal damnation in Abythos.

It has been prophesied by the fate-scryers of the Cult of Gerdia that the Sixth Age of Tel will occur when the Leviathans are finally able to break free from their imprisonment in Abythos and shall stream forth from the bottom of the Central Sea to consume all of Tel in their rage.
