The Twigs of Fate
The Last Remnants of the Weave
There are those who believe the Weave was utterly destroyed, lost to the annals of forgotten history. But this is not the truth. The Weave did not die—it fractured, its vast and intricate lattice splintering into seven remaining fragments, each carrying within it a fundamental truth of existence. These fragments, known as the Twigs of Fate, are not mere relics of a bygone era, nor are they simple conduits of power. They are the last echoes of order, the final embers of a dying fire that still smolders across the planes.
Each Twig is a shard of the original Weave, a core aspect of reality that has remained sundered since the Forsakening. To hold even one is to feel the echoes of the past—whispers of fate, glimpses of a world before its unmaking. They are not just objects; they are choices made manifest.
And they are waiting to be found.
When the Weave Shattered, It Did Not Die
When the Forsakening unraveled the Weave, it should have been the end. The gods, the Primordials, and even the greatest mortal sorcerers believed that Lilith’s great tapestry of existence had been utterly obliterated, leaving only raw, chaotic magic in its wake. But they were wrong.
Whether by design or by some ineffable law of the cosmos, seven fragments of the Weave refused to vanish. They were torn from their rightful place, flung across the multiverse, but they did not perish. They became the Twigs of Fate—shards of what once was, each carrying a sliver of the Weave’s original purpose.
These Twigs are more than artifacts. They are pieces of reality itself, imbued with the lingering will of the Weave. Each holds dominion over a fundamental aspect of fate, and together, they form the last great hope of restoring—or reshaping—the world.
But to find them is no simple task.
The Scattering of the Twigs
The Twigs were not merely lost—they were hidden, sealed, or forgotten, scattered across realms both known and unknown. Some were claimed by those who sought to protect them. Others were imprisoned in places where none could reach. And some… some fell into the hands of beings who would see the Weave remain broken forever.
Where they rest, reality bends. In places where a Twig remains undisturbed, time stutters. Magic shifts. People dream of things they should not know, and places change in ways that defy reason. Some believe the Twigs call to those who are meant to wield them, whispering across the void, waiting for the right hands to claim them once more.
But to wield a Twig is to be changed.
The fragments of the Weave do not grant power without cost. Those who attune to a Twig find themselves touched by fate itself, their destinies forever altered. Visions of the past flood their minds. Probability shifts in their wake. They are no longer mere mortals, but conduits of the Weave’s final breath—and that is a burden few can bear.
For those who would seek the Twigs, one question must be answered:
Are you prepared to shape the fate of the multiverse?
The Powers of The Twigs
Each Twig is a fragment of the Weave, imbued with a singular truth of reality. Though they share a common origin, their powers manifest in vastly different ways, reflecting the aspect of existence they once governed.
Primordial Fragments.
Each Twig contains a sliver of the First Weave’s original power, manifesting as a fundamental force of reality. When attuned, the wielder gains:
- Weave Attunement. The wielder can cast detect magic at will and automatically succeeds on Intelligence (Arcana) checks related to ancient magic or fate.
- Matron’s Echo. The wielder experiences fragmented visions of Lilith’s past—her mortal life, her ascension, and the breaking of the Weave. These visions can provide cryptic guidance or emotional burdens.
- Fractured Destiny. While attuned to a Twig, the wielder subtly alters probability. Once per long rest, they may reroll any attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, choosing either result.
Fated Resonance.
When two or more Twigs are brought together, their latent power stirs:
- The wielder’s spell save DC increases by +2.
- The wielder gains resistance to radiant and necrotic damage.
- The wielder can cast legend lore once per long rest without requiring components.
Shattered Weave.
As fragments of a broken whole, the Twigs disrupt reality:
- Non-attuned creatures attempting to wield a Twig must make a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw or suffer Weave Disjunction, losing the ability to perceive time and reality correctly for 1 minute.
- If a Twig is destroyed, it triggers a Tear in the Weave, causing a wild magic surge (DM’s choice) in a 60-foot radius. If all Twigs are lost or destroyed, the Weave may never be restored.
They are immensely powerful, but their full potential only awakens when attuned. A wielder chosen by fate—one bound to the Weave—can call upon their latent abilities, shaping reality itself in ways no mere spellcaster could.
The Seven Twigs of Fate
1. Twig of Time (The Everturning Branch)
“The past whispers, the future calls, yet the present slips through our fingers.”
- The wielder gains truesight (60 ft.) and can see through magical illusions and time-based distortions.
- Temporal Echo: Once per long rest, the wielder can rewind time by 6 seconds (1 round), undoing their last action and choosing a different course.
2. Twig of Will (The Unbending Root)
“The Weave bends to those who do not break.”
- The wielder gains advantage on saving throws against enchantments, mind control, and divine influence.
- Defiance of Fate: Once per long rest, the wielder can choose to automatically succeed on a saving throw against an effect that would alter their fate (such as a divine curse or a banishment attempt).
3. Twig of Death (The Hollow Sprout)
“Even in death, the threads remain.”
- The wielder can see and communicate with spirits of the dead and gains resistance to necrotic damage.
- Final Mercy: Once per long rest, the wielder can restore a dead creature to life, provided they died within the last minute and are in one piece. This does not require material components, but the creature returns with three levels of exhaustion.
4. Twig of Memory (The Verdant Thread)
“The mind forgets, but the Weave remembers.”
- The wielder gains perfect recall of anything they have ever seen or heard.
- Echo of Ages: Once per long rest, the wielder may call upon the knowledge of past wielders, gaining proficiency in any skill, tool, or language for 1 hour.
5. Twig of Change (The Shifting Splinter)
“Creation is the act of defying what was.”
- The wielder can cast polymorph once per long rest without requiring material components.
- Reality Flux: Once per long rest, the wielder may alter one aspect of reality, causing a minor, permanent change (subject to DM approval).
6. Twig of Unity (The Binding Branch)
“We are threads in a tapestry, woven together or frayed apart.”
- The wielder can cast telepathic bond at will, linking their mind with up to six creatures for 1 hour.
- Harmony’s Weave: Once per long rest, the wielder can grant advantage on all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws to every ally within 30 feet for 1 minute.
7. Twig of Truth (The Last Testament)
“To see the Weave is to know the world as it truly is.”
- The wielder is immune to illusions, shapechanging effects, and any ability that alters their perception of reality.
- Revelation: Once per long rest, the wielder can invoke a Truth Unveiled, revealing the deepest secrets of a person, place, or object, bypassing all magical obfuscation.
A Choice Awaits
The Twigs of Fate are not merely objects to be collected; they are the keys to existence itself. If all seven are gathered and brought before Matron Lilith, the last remaining keeper of the Weave, then—at long last—the fate of reality will be decided.
Path One: Restore the Weave – Rebirth of Order
Some believe that the only path forward is the path backward. That the Weave must be rebuilt, its threads rewoven into the fabric of reality so that magic, time, and fate may once more follow their ordained course. To restore the Weave would be to return balance—to bring back the order that once governed existence, ensuring that gods, mortals, and cosmic forces once again abide by a structured law.
But is the past truly worth restoring?
The original Weave was not perfect. It was a system that limited—a system that bound magic and fate into rigid patterns, preventing true freedom. Many would welcome its return. But many others would fight it with every breath, believing it to be nothing more than a gilded cage.
Those who seek to restore the Weave must ask themselves:
- Will the new Weave be the same as the old, or will it carry the scars of its destruction?
- What forces will rise against such restoration? The gods, the Primordials, the creatures that thrived in chaos—none will accept this without conflict.
- And most of all… if the Weave is restored, who will control it?
Path Two: Reforge the Weave – A New Design
Perhaps the Weave should not be restored as it was. Perhaps it should be made anew—reshaped into something greater, something limitless, something free of the flaws that led to its downfall.
This was the dream of the Netherese. They saw the Weave not as a gift, but as a flawed creation, something that could be improved. To them, the Weave was too rigid, too controlled, too fragile. They sought something unbreakable, a Spiral that would allow for limitless magic, boundless potential.
Now, with the Twigs of Fate gathered, that dream could become reality.
But what kind of Weave should be forged?
- Should it be one that empowers mortals beyond all previous limits?
- Should it be an open system, allowing anyone to reshape it as they see fit?
- Should the gods be written out of it entirely? Should fate itself be abolished?
This path is the most dangerous, for to rewrite reality is to play the role of the Matron herself. Those who walk it may not remain mortal for long.
Path Three: Abandon the Weave – Let Fate Die
And then there is the final choice. The choice that few consider, and fewer dare to take.
What if the Weave was never meant to exist?
What if Lilith’s grand design was a mistake? What if, by trying to impose order on reality, she created an unnatural prison—one that was meant to be broken?
If the Weave remains shattered, the multiverse will continue to unravel. Magic will remain wild, the gods unbound, time unshackled. The world will either tear itself apart or find a new balance, one shaped by nothing but raw will and power.
To take this path is to embrace uncertainty. It is to say that fate should not be dictated, that reality should shape itself freely, without rules, without limits.
But if this choice is made, then the final question is simple:
Without the Weave, what will remain?
The Fate of Reality Is in the Hands of Those Who Remain
The Twigs of Fate are more than artifacts. They are the last threads of a broken world, the final remnants of a power that once held all things together. Their existence alone is enough to shape the course of history—but their true power lies in choice.
Will the Weave be reborn?
Will it be reforged into something new?
Or will it be abandoned, left to rot, while reality finds its own path forward?
This is the choice that awaits those who would seek the Twigs of Fate.
This is the decision that will shape the future of existence itself.
