Talisman Technology / Science in The Flying Flux | World Anvil

Talisman

A magically-enhanced item that is similar to an artifact, but with a less direct and infinitely more desirable effect. Talismans are very rare in Flux since their creation is usually the result of a fatal accident.

Utility

Talismans have numerous uses, but most of their effects are defensive. While they are not user-specific (like artifacts), the residing soul must acknowledge the user as its master before any effects will be felt. This can be extremely dangerous, since a talisman with ill intent might try to hijack the wielder's mind or act as an influential parasite to fulfill its own agenda.

Complexity
Objects that are magically unstable (like Iron) are practically useless for a talisman's creation, since the excess energy will merely consume any soul unfortunate enough to enter. Because of this, the only truly useful medium is gold, though other materials have been known to work.
Discovery
During the creation of a particularly powerful magical artifact, a naive mage accidentally applied too much personal perception and pushed his soul into a golden ring. The unfortunate creature's greed would drive the wearer mad, so it was transported to another dimension where a powerful necromancer later found it.
