Stupidity Condition in The Flying Flux | World Anvil

Stupidity

A wide-spread condition which is created when a being continuously makes illogical decisions that don't necessarily require magical correction. When one contracts stupidity, magic localizes in the host (though typically in small amounts) and creates an addiction. If sustained for too long, its withdrawals could be fatal.

Transmission & Vectors

Ignorance is the mental manifestation of cognitive biases which directly affect an individual's perspective. The primary difference between this and stupidity is the specific aspect of reality that is afflicted. These were classified as varying degrees of ignorance, specifically a "psychological" and "physical" embodiment of the same condition.

However, unlike ignorance, stupidity does not affect an individual's perspective, but rather their surroundings. To be clear, stupidity is caused by disrupting the Law of Constancy, not "poisoning" the Law of Perception against the host. This environmental disequilibrium is essentially created when something illogical occurs (prompted by an intelligent being via the Law of Perception) and magic rushes in to correct it, but finds no need.

For example, if a Fluxer suddenly decided to eat a rock (while fully aware that it is a normal rock), magic would appear to correct the logical error in the host, but wouldn't actually do anything. The exact amount of magical power that appears directly correlates with how illogical (or "stupid") an action is, and high concentrations can be fatal.

Symptoms

Magic is a subconscious force in Fluxers, gods, and demigods, and when a host accepts large quantities of magic without using it to correct reality, the host becomes afflicted. However, because this is both a physical and magic-based condition, a sickness might temporarily improve the host's outward condition. Though, dependencies are built rather quickly and the host's health will deteriorate rapidly unless stupidity is somehow perpetuated.

The withdrawals from stupidity are minor at first, but playing into its addictive nature can lead to permanent damage and/or even death. Fortunately, such extreme cases are incredibly rare despite how wide-spread this odd disease is.

Prevention

Individuals who suffer from ignorance are prone to contracting stupidity, mostly because their objective reasoning is affected and their understanding of reality is skewed. For them, infection is an inevitability, but others may stumble across it in a moment of doubt or poor judgement.

While nearly every Fluxer is likely to suffer from stupidity at least once, it can be prevented by calculated and direct actions that have been thought to completion.
