Iron Away Tradition / Ritual in The Flying Flux | World Anvil

Iron Away

A biannual tradition where the residents of Flux (primarily the Lower and Higher Lands) hurl their excess iron into the sun. This is done when the world runs parallel to the great coin of fire, which occurs twice per year, hence the tradition's timing.

History

If the world could be united by one universal passion, it would be hate for the dreadful material known as iron. This flaky metallic substance is found everywhere because it acts as the Flux's skeletal system, not to mention is highly susceptible to magical influence which makes it incredibly dangerous in large amounts.

Want for this tradition prompted the creation of catapults, which became an instrument of war after serving its initial purpose of hurling various chunks of iron into the sun. This is not done from the Inlands due to the intense heat, but from the more distant Low and Highland locations.

Execution

  • The condemned iron is separated and placed in a catapult
  • It is then hurled into the sun

Naturally speaking, this should be impossible due to how the opposing gravitational ripples create an invisible barrier of gravity, but because magic is an executive energy and iron is riddled with magic, it passes through quite easily1.

Components and tools

  • A catapult (or some other device that launches)
  • Iron
Not much else is needed for the execution of this ritual, but there are sometimes cultural decorations that are somehow integrated.

Participants

Those who dwell in the Out and Inlands don't participate, but because the Higher, Middle, and Lower Lands do, it is still a transcontinental tradition.
Footnote1
According to the Law of Magic, everything is subject to magic except Time. This means the logical laws of Flux can be overridden should a paradoxical or impossible event occur. This is typically due to a mistake on the gods' part, not the actual residents. Because Iron is riddled with magic, large quantities will occasionally defy logic and do something entirely unpredictable, or Illogically Understandable. What I mean by "illogically understandable" is doing something like passing through an invisible barrier as if it was never there because the observers don't notice it. It (in minor ways) bends to contradict the restrictions placed on the Law of Perception and works against logic to fit an observer's perspective.

Sometime countries will strap prisoners to the iron as a form of capitol punishment.
