Welcome to the Feengrenze
In a forgotten corner of the Dungeons and Dragons multiverse lies a world betwixt and between. It is a place north of the Material Plane, south of the Feywild, west of nowhere, and east of everywhere. This nowhere world hangs between the two planes like a rope in an endless tug-of-war, caught in the ceaseless clash between mundanity and whimsy. This tiny, enigmatic speck of rock and water is called the Feengrenze.
A World of Whimsy and Danger
From a distance, the Feengrenze may seem familiar, even earth-like, with a vaguely charming allure. But appearances are deceiving. It is one of the most perilous worlds in the multiverse. The tension between the Material Plane's stability and the Feywild's capriciousness stretches the fabric of reality. When the strain becomes too great, it snaps, unleashing Whimwhirls—swirling, technicolored, ball-shaped storms.
These chaotic tempests tumble across the land like destructive pinballs, irreversibly altering everything they touch. Time tangles into knots, space fractures, landscapes melt, climates unravel, and living beings are transformed in bizarre, often terrifying or darkly humorous ways. Detritus and people from distant civilizations are hurled across the Feengrenze, leaving devastation and mystery in their wake. Survival depends on either adapting to the chaos or finding refuge in the sheltered cracks of this fractured world.
Civilization in the Cracks
In these cracks, what passes for civilization clings to survival. Tiny hamlets and villages are wedged into gorges, hidden in caves, or nestled in folds of the landscape where Whimwhirls cannot reach. Larger realms occasionally emerge, though calling them "kingdoms" may be generous. These towns and their surrounding farmland are ruled by amoral sorcerer kings and wicked witch queens.
These rulers, aware of their realms' laughable size compared to city-states in other worlds, seethe with envy. Their resentment fuels the Great Game, a constant cycle of schemes, dark rituals, and quests for esoteric knowledge aimed at elevating their prestige while undermining their rivals.
The Alien Nature of the Feyfolk
The Feyfolk, who inhabit similarly small kingdoms, are often entangled in these schemes. But dealing with them is treacherous. Their alien morality revolves around beauty as truth, an intuitive over logical worldview, and an obsession with promises, oaths, and balance. Mortals who negotiate with the Feyfolk frequently find themselves ensnared in dreamlike logic and contradictory obligations.
The Untamed Wilds
Beyond the tenuous lights of civilization lie the Wilds—vast, uncharted territories fraught with peril. Here, temporal and spatial anomalies, powerful wild magic zones, and monstrous beings abound. Hermits with strange powers, awakened carnivorous fauna as cunning as human hunters, and horrors dragged from other worlds roam these lands. Yet the Wilds also lure the bold with tales of ruins left in the wake of Whimwhirls, offering untold riches and ancient secrets for those brave—or foolish—enough to seek them.
Glimmers of Hope
Amid the darkness, rare exceptions shine like distant stars. The Kingdom of New Mountainheart has resisted the descent into petty squabbles and cruelty. Its Archfey ruler, Fredrick von Bergherz, the eternal prince, embodies both hope and tragedy. If he could end his centuries-long bout of pining and moping over his missing wife, the kingdom might rise to greatness.
Similarly, the witches of the Silver Moon Coven work tirelessly to mitigate the damage wrought by the Great Game. Though they stop short of directly opposing the corrupt nobles at the heart of the Feengrenze's woes, by the gods, they try.
The Half-Fey City
Change stirs in the capital of New Mountainheart, Sliberberg—a vibrant, chaotic half-fey city. Whether this change will bring hope or despair remains to be seen.
