Oriab (Ore-ree-ab)

City of Tolerance

Oriab is situated on the island of Bahar in the South Crown Sea. humid and warm location where the Ogak'Ket are said to still lurk in the shadows, striking deals with merchant-kings who trace their lineage back to the Age of Bleached Bones, approximately 6000 years ago when the city was known as Tahib of Yath.   Even before The Fall Interregnum shattered Geron's empires, the port was a bustling independent city-state used as a political neutral zone. In Oriab, civility and tolerance allow decadent taboos to flourish just beneath the worn pavestones of it's streets. The heretical and materialist Baharists share the city's antiquity stores and tea shops with the apocalyptic Sattarist hedonists, rubbing shoulders with diplomats of the Grand Accord and the pirate-kings of the Kashdan sea.

Stinking Yath

Much of the canals of Tahib are now submerged beneath the cloudy lagoon of Yath due to events which occured during the Great War. These submarine ruins continue to be populated by Tauth, Strig, and other aquatic or amphibious creatures. The once-vast system of canals is now mostly filled in by rubble and garbage which Yath's residents dig through when not working in Oriab's undercity of warehouses.

The Dark Sister, the Forbidden City

Beyond Yath, the central and western parts of Bahar have long since been abandoned to the jungle. Ruins and tall, verdant trees are said to hide the outposts of pirates, cannibals, and the twisted remnants of The Fall. At the western end of the island lies the Forbidden City, a large ruin built around what is believed to be the base of a particularly large entrance to the Archaea in the remains of a volcano.   Rumors abound that at night, strange translucent can be seen going up and down the Forbidden City's extensive terraces, lighting their way wih eery blue-green fire. Little else indicates that anyone resides within the inky black ruins, seemingly deserted by daylight.

Shabdafar and the Black Fleet

Within the bastion of Oriab, the Shabdafar operate outside the rules in an expectedly bureaucratic and formal manner, putting to work a fleet of black merchant ships which are a regular site throughout the Western Seas and Sister Seas. These ships are widely rumored to pay for trade goods primarily in rubies. An old legend connects these rubies with another ruin with a similar appearance to the Forbidden City, the Nameless Rock which exists in the South Seas. Old sailor's yarns say that there, the souls of those captured by the black ships are traded for or turned into the precious rubies so common amongst the merchants of Oriab.

Antiquities and Artifice

Oriab is particularly famous for the ancient arcane art which still stands in much of the bastion. Moving statues powered by waterwheels, statues that tell time and other unusual feats of artifice are relatively common there. Of particular interest to sailors who find themselves in Oriab are the 'floating spheres', presents from the lost empire of [[[Ashkagha]]]. The spheres hover silently over parts of the city doing little but reflecting the glare of the tropical sun.     [[div class="my-heading"]] +++
