Azarian

The Azarians are the least common and least numerous of the Amathians, with most of their current numbers living in the Tessar Maze and the Miasma-ridden valleys of Azrakhar, having resided there since the Great War some 7000 years ago. Their time within the maze has made them expert trackers and navigators, living amongst constantly shifting mountain passes and the foul emanations which spill from beyond the valley. Some few choose to break their oath and leave the valley and the maze, settling elsewhere in the world. The most fortunate amongst them find work as guides and navigators, with the least fortunate working in tanneries, apothecaries and pipemakers where they gamble on their natural resistance to poisoning. Many but not all Azarians practice Azrakharian ear-binding, a form of piercing and binding where the tips of the ears are bound by cordage and tied around the back of the head, kept above the hair in fair weather and beneath the hair in bad weather.

The Companion

To survive the strange conditions of the valley, many Azarians who grew up in Azrakhar take on a symbiotic infection delivered via spore which they call the Companion. The source of the Companion, the method of making it safe for inhalation and the ceremony in which the Companion is placed in an Azarian's body is considered sacred. Through an unknown measure, the Companion allows Azarians to tolerate the the poisonous air of the valley. Azarians who grow up in other kingdoms don't may choose to break with tradition and not take on the Companion. Azarians can tell when another Azarian hasn't taken on the Companion and assume the worst, believing that not taking the Companion leaves an Azarian without a soul. Such Azarians rename unnamed.

Cousin to the Ebron

The Azarians are common descendents of a 'lost' Amathian lineage shared with the Ebron.
