Arata

Arata (a.k.a. Hawkeye)

Arata is a young man of The Masks inner circle, and the deuteragonist of the story. He was first recruited by Naomi, and after her death became more active in his role. His weapon of choice are firearms, despite how expensive they are to aquire and maintain in the Facility. He chooses to wield them as he is incapable of fighting physically. His Ability grants him incredible eyesight; he has beyond perfect vision, and can zoom in a (currently) undisclosed distance. Arata also has night sight capabilites, and added stability in his hands and arms to benefit.   He was in prsion for two years following the murder of his mother before he was summoned to participate in Game. Arata, Naomi, and Demon Face were very close before Naomi's death. Following that, Arata and Demon face become inseperable.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Arata is a physically fit man, with muscles one would get from daily physical work and combat. Scars from blades, cuts, and bullets dot his body, and he is missing half of his left pinky finger due to an accident. At the very end of, and post winning Hell Game, his left eye is scarred.   His ability primarily affects his eyes due to his weapons of choice being firearms. He has drastically enhanced vision, able to "zoom" into far distances and activate night vision when necessary.

Body Features

Various scars dot his body, though not as many as others due to his withdrawn position during combat. He is fit, but not overly muscular from daily combat and walking/running. His left pinky was crushed in combat, and only half of it remains as a result. At the end of Hell Game, he sustains a serious gunshot wound to his left eye that leaves it scarred and almost completely disables his ability in it.

Facial Features

Arata is a gruff looking man at first. His square jaw and stern eyes give an intimidating impression to those first meeting him. However, his relaxed smile shows his friendly side.

Identifying Characteristics

He has somewhat long, unkempt hair, normally kept up.

Specialized Equipment

Arata receives an all weather jacket from Aimee that holds ample survival tools, ammo, and even guns. He has a worn and very reliable gun belt he uses daily, that he received from his father.

Personal history

A young Arata stands partly behind a living room couch, frozen in place. His mother is screaming in anger over an unintelligible slight. She picks up a glass and throws it. Eyes following the glass, Arata finds his father clutching his head, then blood coming from his hands. Only when the young boy begins to cry in fear do his parents realize what he had witnessed. This was Arata's very first memory.   His mother Maria's abuse toward Shin had begun long before Arata was born, but they had kept it hidden until that moment. However, pandora's box cannot be closed once opened. Arata would slowly begin to recognize and understand the relationship his parents had. Maria would gradually become less secretive about the abuse, and Arata would withdraw from her into his fathers arms in spite of the facade of a happy family Maria desperately tried to upkeep. This angered her greatly, and only lead to more abuse. A mear whisper of divorce would lead to screaming and swearing Shin would never see Arata again. Shin tried his best to shield him from this abuse, but children are perceptive. Even though Shin was cowed, he never once let Maria lay a hand on Arata.   Once old enough, Shin frequently took Arata out hunting and fishing, and when the boy was old enough, even paintballing. It was during these trips, in the moments of privacy the two shared, that Arata felt safe enough to question and even challenge his father. "Why don't you leave mom?", "Why does mom keep hitting you?", "Why don't you say anything?"   Each and every question had an answer, the confidence behind them weakening over the years. "I love your mother, she just has some trouble managing her anger.", "She doesn't mean to be violent... she truly loves us, you know?", "Well, you know my issues with balance have gotten so bad I can't work. She provides for us, she doesn't have to do that, but she does because she really cares." Yet whatever the answer, Arata would never blame or come to hate Shin. Eventually "She would never lay a hand on you!" turned into "I would never let her lay a hand on you, son." And "I'm sorry you've had to see me like this son...Maybe once you're old enough, if she's still like this, we can live apart for bit." Arata naiively hoped that his prodding would one day give his father the courage to leave.    As if witnessing his beloved father's abuse wasn't enough weight on his young mind, he felt his mother's actions affect other aspects of his life. Witnessing Maria's violence from such a young age caused him to act out -somtimes even violently- at school. For years Arata had nobody but his parents to keep him company, and when he eventually cleaned up his act enough to make some friends, he could never bring them home.   Yet despite the wrongs of his life stemming from his mother, Arata...simply could not bring himself to hate her. Maria indeed never laid a hand on her son, in fact she often made time for the two of them. When a young Arata fought in school, she would pick him up and admonish him like a normal mother. When Arata asked his mother if she loved him, she would answer "Yes, of course" without skipping a beat, like any loving mother would. Maria desperately tried to keep the relationship between her and Arata as "normal" as it could be... Yet her motherly smile was identical to the hollow one she would put on when she told a lie, like that one time she told the neighbor that loud crash was from moving furniture...   Arata thought at some point; his mother was incapable of loving like a normal person. That must be why she hurts his father, but turns around and acts so kindly. That must be why he cannot bring himself to hate her...nor love her. Their relationship was distant, but held together by the invisible rope of a family.   The rope that held Arata's entire life in place became thinner and thinner as time went on...until one day it snapped alltogether. At sixteen, Arata had physically outgrown both his parents, though none of them had quite realized it. One evening came another tirade from Maria, followed by the useless apologies and a desperate silence from Shin. However, her abuse was especially brutal this time. Shin had recently hurt his legs while working, and could not walk for long as a result. Maria, in an act of cruelty uncharacteristic even for her, kicked Shin's ailing legs out from under him. Arata happened to be returning from school at that very moment, and witnessed his father's agony. In an act that shocked even himself, he found himself restraining his mother, screaming words that he doesn't even remember.   Shin's worried cries shook Arata from his blinding rage. Despite his pain, Shin put his worry for Maria and Arata before himself. The aftermath of that incident is now a blur to Arata, though two things were certain; his father's legs never fully recovered, and his mother knew further abuse would not be tolerated. It was this event that lead to Shin and Maria's divorce. At seventeen, the divorce was finalized and Arata moved out with Shin permanently, cutting virtually all contact with his mother.   For four years, the two finally lived free of abuse and pain. Arata finished school, and began an apprenticeship to become a tattoo artist. The two of them still went on their fishing and hunting trips, but his father's knees were too weak to go paintballing together. This didn't bother Arata though; their peace was all he needed to feel satisfied. All was well, until Maria wormed her way back into Shin's life.   Arata was angered to hear his father had resumed speaking to Maria. Shin assured him it was small talk, and nothing would come of it. However as time went on, Maria promised she had gotten therapy and changed, and reminisced of their early relationship - the rare happy moments they shared as a family. Shin dearly missed the Maria he had married, and though the years post divorce had been peaceful, he had never recovered his self worth that had been torn down for years. Despite Arata's pleading, both upset and out of anger, Maria slowly entered their lives again.   A few months into their visits, Shin's health began to decline. Doctors claimed it was a combination of age and pre-existing health issues, and Maria quickly volunteered to help Shin recover. Arata was suspicious of her, and pleaded with his father to have him help instead, even promising to put his work on hold. Shin refused; his pride as a father wouldn't let himself stifle his son's dreams. Frustrated, Arata still did as much as he could to discourage the relationship and take care of his father. Arata hoped that once his father recovered, he could talk some sense into him once more. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a small dip in health mysteriously turned into a downward spiral. Shin never could seem to recover, leaving his doctors befuddled. Many tests were done, but doctors could not come to a conclusion. Less than a year after Shin fell ill, he passed away.   Arata was shattered. In less than a year, the peace he had wished a lifetime for was destroyed, and the person he loved most died. He found himself unable to function; he lost his internship and many friends. His grief was too deep for him to bear; feeling like everything in his life had come crashing down at once. In his haze of despair, he reached out to anything that could help him, but only his mother extended a hand back. Arata leaned on her. For a brief time, Maria was the mother Shin remembered, the mother in Arata's most cherished memories. But beneath his grief and need for comfort and stability, Arata's suspicions would grab hold of his mind. "Why would she only act like this now? Why couldn't she be this loving before?" he thought. He could not let go of weariness; had his mother had a place in his fathers decline?   Arata wondered if he was losing his mind. His suspicions clawed their way into the front of his mind every time he tried to push them away. He wanted nothing more than to ignore his gut; to pretend the mother he knows now was the same as the one he grew up with...but it was impossible. Arata was the executor of Shin's estate, and secretly ordered Shin's grave to be exhumed and a late autopsy to be done. The longer he waited for the results, the sillier he felt. Arata knew his mother was cruel, but she had never done anything more deadly than throw a glass at his father. He had nearly resigned to call the autopsy off alltogether, when the results suddenly came in.   A large amount of poison was found in his body post mortem. Still apparent even months after his death.   Arata forgot how to breathe. His stomach dropped and he felt like throwing up all at once. The nagging in his head was right. Maria had poisoned his father.       "Mom, did you...did you do something to dad?"   "What? What do you mean by that?"   "...Did you poison him?"   And of course, she would deny it with an incredulous "No!" But there was the same kind of tone and nuance in her answer that he had come to recognize growing up. The same "no" she would give when Arata once asked her if she hated his dad. The same kind of "no" when asked if she meant to get angry all the time. If she meant to draw blood, or make dad cry. Maybe it was the knowing look on Arata's face, the way he instantly saw through her that made her confess.   She had been poisoning him ever since she was put in charge of his care. Why? She wanted her son back.   "Your father poisoned you first! Your mind! You against me! He waited until you were old enough to leave me, so you couldn't be forced to stay! You don't realize what I've done for you! If he hadn't taken you from me, this wouldn't have happened!"   Her confession lit a fire in Arata, and her twisted reasoning was the fatal fuel to the flame. Arata attacked his mother, strangling her to death. If you were to ask him about that moment, if he would open up to you at all, he would tell you it was like an entirely different person was controlling his body from the moment he heard her confession. Arata had never felt such rage and despair in a single moment before. He "came to" with his mothers neck between his hands; her face a dark purple, the life in her eyes faded.   The months from that moment could only be described as a daze. He turned himself in, but fought for an autopsy of his father for proof behind his testimony. Due to the unusual nature of Shin's death, it was easily granted. The autopsy proved there were fatal levels of toxins present in his blood consistant with gradual poisoning. Arata testified of her abuse growing up, that she had confessed her crimes to him, causing his lapse in control. His case recieved spots on national news outlets; many believed it was a justified crime of passion, others thought an eye for an eye would make the world blind. As for Arata, despite what he testified, his feelings were like a whirlpool. He hated his mother, yet her dead visage would haunt his dreams. Ultimately, the judge did not show Arata much lenience, stating that while his childhood was sympathetic, his actions as an adult could not be pardoned, and sentenced Arata to 25 years in prison.   Arata spent two years in prison before his mandate to Game was given. He spent the time working out, reading, and trying to mourn the whirlwind of the last few years of his freedom. When he was mandated to attend Game, he felt scornful. He felt wronged by everyone in his life, like the only years of happiness were spent in that peaceful, fragile bubble. Having somehow sunk lower than his lowest point, he felt he had no choice but to try and fight. Though his reason and resolve were so weak, he refused to acknowledge that fact, for he felt it would shatter in an instant.   About a month and a half into Game, Naomi" target="_blank">Naomi recruited him into The Masks. Arata chooses to keep firearms as his weapon of choice, not only due to his experience; the trauma of his crime has rendered him unable to fight with his hands. Not long after he was recruited, Naomi would also drag Demon Face in as well, where the main story begins.

Sexuality

Pansexual.

Education

High school education. Sometime after the events of the Game, he becomes a tattoo artist.

Employment

Part of the Masks, as well as a tattoo agency. WIP.

Accomplishments & Achievements

A Champion of the XX . WIP

Failures & Embarrassments

Failed to take down the Head Crow(placeholder).

Mental Trauma

PTSD from his time in the Facility, and the circumstances surrounding his fathers death. Due to the latter, he dislikes fighting barehanded, especially when it comes to choking someone.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

At first, his motivation to enter the Game was half suicide, half indigence against his prison sentence. However, after meeting Red and bonding with the members of The Masks, he felt less suicidal and chased the happy times that could be found in a hellhole like the Facility. After their deaths, he is driven by a sense of vengeance, and wanting to live out his life with the rest of the new family he has formed.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Arata is an incredible marksman, even without the enhancements provided by his ability. He is also well rounded in general survival and hunting skills due to his experience camping and hunting with his father. However, despite his tough stature, he is not the best at hand to hand combat. He may hold his own on a street fight, but against more skilled individuals he will likely lose. This has him usually taking the position of a sniper on the battlefield, necessitating others fight before him. To compensate for this, his precision and accuracy is so high that he may easily shoot around his allies with ease. When fighting with Demon Face, they are especially in sync.   WIP

Likes & Dislikes

Loves video games, playing the bass guitar, and working out. Enjoys sweet and salty foods! Hates sour things.   WIP

Virtues & Personality perks

Very loyal, almost to a fault. Arata may look intimidating, but he's very kind, especially if you make friends with him. Boneheaded, but very endearing.   WIP im not good at writing out things like this.

Vices & Personality flaws

His loyalty and love toward a person may make him dependent on that person. After surviving Game, he states his only reason for living is Demon Face and The Masks, as an example.   He can be a bit cruel or unmerciful, and used to criticize Demon Face for her "softness."   Sometimes hides the fact he is upset over something, to the bother of those around him.

Personality Quirks

If he sleeps next to someone, he will cuddle them in his sleep.   WIP

Social

Social Aptitude

Pretty extroverted, however he can be quiet. When he isn't, he can be quite rowdy and enjoys messing with people. His jovial nature means he can make friends easily.
