Mold Earth

This is an excellent spell for those looking to capitalize on creating cover and physical obstructions as a form of defense and area control. A five foot by five foot cube of dirt is excellent cover and any medium or smaller creature can crouch down for total cover or benefit from 3/4ths cover while still maintaining visual contact with a target. Saving your dirt inside a Bag of Holding or even just having a mule dedicated to carrying around dirt would be enough to ensure you always have mobile cover. This spell can also be used to terraform a small area by packing down loose dirt, moving stones and smoothing out terrain to create a camp, dig ditches and latrines, make tracks and ramps for carts and beasts of burden or even form crude earthen works. A versatile and strong cantrip in and out of combat.

Effect

You choose a portion of dirt or stone that you can see within range and that fits within a 5-foot cube. You manipulate it in one of the following ways:

  • If you target an area of loose earth, you can instantaneously excavate it, move it along the ground, and deposit it up to 5 feet away. This movement doesn’t have enough force to cause damage.
  • You cause shapes, colors, or both to appear on the dirt or stone, spelling out words, creating images, or shaping patterns. The changes last for 1 hour.
  • If the dirt or stone you target is on the ground, you cause it to become difficult terrain. Alternatively, you can cause the ground to become normal terrain if it is already difficult terrain. This change lasts for 1 hour.

    If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have no more than two of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time, and you can dismiss such an effect as an action.

This spell can disrupt local plant life depending on where it is cast.

Manifestation

Whether there is some flash of energy or if the earth just changes to fit the caster's designs is dependent on the caster.
