Green-Flame Blade Spell in The Extended Perkinsverse | World Anvil

Green-Flame Blade

The debate surrounding the cantrips Booming Blade and Green-Flame Blade generally regards Booming Blade as the superior melee cantrip. I disagree with this assessment as Green-flame Blade's promise is for guaranteed damage on an adjacent target so long as you successfully strike a primary target. As you level up this cantrip will also deal additional damage to the primary target and the dice damage is doubled on a critical hit for both primary and secondary targets. Bladesinger Wizards who are also Assassin Rogues will find this cantrip to be superior in every way.

Effect

Make a melee attack with it against one creature within 5 feet of you. On a hit, the target suffers the weapon attackā€™s normal effects, and you can cause green fire to leap from the target to a different creature of your choice that you can see within 5 feet of it. The second creature takes fire damage equal to your spellcasting ability modifier.
At Higher Levels. At 5th level, the melee attack deals an extra 1d8 fire damage to the target on a hit, and the fire damage to the second creature increases to 1d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. Both damage rolls increase by 1d8 at 11th level (2d8 and 2d8) and 17th level (3d8 and 3d8).

Manifestation

Green flames wreath your weapon as you strike your primary target. When you successfully strike your primary target, a secondary target you choose, within 5 ft. of your primary target, takes an amount of fire damage based on your level. The exact color or shape of these flames isn't important. They could be little flaming elementals or imps spawned by your spell. The flames could be brown, they could be blue, they could be violet sky, they could be hurtful, they could be purple, they could be anything you like!
