Mechabowl

Mechas. Large machines piloted by one or two people and maintained by small teams of engineers and mechanics. They have long been a core piece of Imperial culture. While they were originally designed for military purpose, it was soon discovered that they proved too unwieldy to properly fight against the monsters of the wastelands.   But that doesn't mean they did not find a new purpose. Mechabowl was a competition developed by members of the Viciti Machina, Avrelle Industriel, and Jordon companies for the purpose of scouting new inventors and to make money via marketing. Several independent inventors can approach the hosting agencies for funding for building mechas to participate in the games.   Mechas Built for this competition will be piloted in fights against other mechas in a variety of competitions for a grand prize. These competitions can range from everything from tests of speed, endurance, or even combat. All the designs being owned by the respective corps backing them. Those who's work impresses the respective corporations will be bid on to determine which company will get to employ the young inventor.   The events are watched by almost everyone within the Imperial borders although for different reasons. The poor and middle class watch for the spectacle while the rich watch for betting and for determining who to sponsor or even who to try to recruit.   Cheating and subterfuge are very common in this event. Engineers and pilots will often work against each other to sabotage other mechas in order to give themselves a leg up in the competition.

Execution

The competition usually starts with an agility test. The mechs will individually attempt to circumnavigate an obstacle course in the best time. The next event is a speed test, to see how quickly a mecha can complete a straight line dash. Then comes the endurance test, this is the least interesting of the events, with mechs operating for as long as they can before they burn through their power supply. Lastly comes the combat test. Two mechas fight each other until one is disabled. The mechs are then repaired and move forward in the competitive cycle. For the entire competition to be completed, it usually takes around 16 weeks.
