The Void - What is it and why should you care?
The Void is the substitute for all magic, regardless of where it once originated.
Little is known about the origins of the Void or what brought it into being. Millennia old records speak of times before the void- recounting tales of gods and magic, bearing similarities to what we see now. However, an event took place at the beginning of the Age of the Void known as the Silent Purge. Technologies based in magic simply ceased to function, those once healed by divine magics fell ill once again, and communications between systems ceased.
The beings once held as divine disappeared, their followers unable to gain access to what was once second nature. Great sages and mystics reduced to commoners in a blink of an eye. Then, as if from nothing, their magic returned, but it was different. Tainted. Many believed those who were first touched by the Void were corrupted, fear and panic only easing away when it was observed that those who possessed this new magic had no change in personality. Whatever this energy was, it was not a corrupting force.
Those who became known as ‘Children of the Void’ found their place in the galaxy once more. The technology and systems once fueled by magic adjusted to towards fuel and crystals rather than relying on magic, especially as the magic of the Void provided no real energy replacement. Over the course of centuries, the galaxy was restored, but a general lack of understanding towards the Void leaves some suspicious still.
Many have tried to research the Void, but little evidence towards what the Void is. All that is really known is that the Void does not have a single way that it affects its children. An inheritance, a gift granted, a call answered, a forceful presence- all children of the Void have their stories, some more gruesome than others. Despite everything, the effect the Void has on the average life of a citizen is little. While the Ebon Temple worships the Void, many children of the Void simply wish to live normal lives.
For those children who put their skills to use, however, in the sciences or on the field of battle, the Void is a force to be reckoned with.
“The Void. We’ve all know it, it’s everywhere, yet nowhere, but what is it?
How does one describe such an abstract concept as the nothing that is something? I struggled with this for most of my life, and to say that I have a definitive answer would be a contradiction to the very idea of the Void.
Let me put it like this: When you have a shirt on, you’re wearing something, yes? And if you’ve got pants, boots, you’re wearing something still. But take all that off and you’d think you’re wearing nothing, right? That’s not quite true, though, is it? You’re wearing something- your skin, the flesh that binds your bones together, the atmosphere that grips you and keeps you from floating into the sky above.
Nothing is something.
Everyone connects to the Void differently. Some will never feel its pull and carry on through their lives without thinking about it once. Others- Mystics, Solarians, even Technomancers- the void calls to them, grants them the energy to accomplish great feats beyond imagination.
It is energy, powering magic once thought lost to the ages. Bringing life to those who have fallen.
Yet it is a mystery.
We lack understanding of something so vast, so incomprehensible, yet so crucial to all beings throughout the galaxy. It is only natural for anyone to fear what they do not understand. But we must not allow that fear to stop us from embracing what already surrounds us. This great energy, this force, it is wonderful and terrifying, just as the expanse of space is.
The Children of the Void seek understanding in what the Void has granted us. We must embrace the fear of the unknown and stride towards it with our heads held high. And should we falter, there is comfort in knowing that we shall meet once again in the great embrace of the Void.
May the Void guide our steps to wisdom.”
