The Food of Hardtack Country

To the north-east of the Hadean continent is a vast stretch of hardscrabble land that seems devoid of water and a reprieve from the heat. The ground itself is hardpacked and dusty, and like the Skitterlakes in an oxymoronic fashion. Where Hardtack Country is dry and devoid of animals and living plantlife, the Skitterlakes are sopping wet to the point of illivibility. While no one, even the desperate, makes their home in those soaked expanses, the same cannot be said of its arid counterpart.   The inhabitants of the area, while making an incredibly interesting topic for their impressive go at carving out a society within such an inhospitable place, are not the question that was asked to start my archiving. So, what do the people in Hardtack Country eat?   Unfortunately, the title is rather indicative.   The region has had a particular grain, a strange middle ground between millet and farro (or so it's been described to me), cultivated in passable quantities. It's hardly a cash crop, but it is apparently sufficient to meet the dietary needs of the region. When harvested and ground, the grain apparently holds enough water so as to become a paste beneath the grindstone, which can then be placed on a griddle or heated stone to be cooked. Rather simple, as things go.   Unfortunately, that is really the extent of the process. There is little to add to the paste that they cook, and the flavor is notoriously...bland.   As a friend of mine once said: "The food is flat, both in flavor and in dimension. It comes in griddle cakes, rods, and thin sheets, yet the flavor is ever the same."
While the inhabitants of Hardtack Country rarely want anything to do with outsiders, and don't even wish to trade for most items or amenities. The singular exception to their resistance is for honey, for which they will trade much of what they have for a jar or amphora. To help maintain their forts in the region, garrisons often maintain a stock of honey to trade for the 'food' of the region.
