Spirit Hound Profession in The Epoch of Black Glass | World Anvil

Spirit Hound

At one time, the Manifestations that the Otonomoi Oscaller's required were not so plentiful as they are today. The Daemonmarkets weren't even a glimmer in anyone's eye, and the Silent Cities held nothing but taboos and fears of entire cultures. Thus the Spirit Hounds were needed.    They'd chase legends and rumors with equal tenacity, hoping to find a Manifestation after their long slog.    Then the real work began. For those that have not attempted to contract a completely wild Daemon, unassisted by anything but the most simple of tools and assistance, I recommend that you keep it that way. Dangers are uncountable, and the best plan is to follow someone well-versed in the behavior of Daemons, Sprites, and other such Manifestations from a significant distance back. If successful, the Hound would carry their prize back to an Oscaller, collect their payment, and set back out onto the road again for their next lead and hopeful quarry.   You want no part in such a profession, not if you want to live more than a century. Thankfully, you don't have to, as a new profession has replaced it, with dangers to equal or even surpass that of the Spirit Hound.    The moment the true treasure-trove of Daemons became known, as well as the many other items on offer for Delvers to claim and grow rich off of within the Silent City, the Spirit Hound profession began to die. It was a slow process, no one was sure just how much could be found within those empty urban environs, but the tide has not abated even slightly since the profession is only held by a few Otonomoi who have reached their later centuries.    The few who persist are...driven. Driven by myth and legend, that is, more than the profession had been originally. Their order has transformed into what amounts to a guild of treasure hunters, trying to find Daemons of legend, Sprites of fantastic power, or even those Faeries that are worthy of worship. Their return of effort and investment rarely return anything at all these days, and they disappear in the unlit corners of the world more often than not, forever shrinking their remaining numbers.
The name Spirit Hound comes from the old practice of attempting to track spirits with specially created breeds of dog, some of which are still used for their remarkable tracking abilities, even if they didn't truly see Manifestations.
