Sanbranq Ethnicity in The Epoch of Black Glass | World Anvil

Sanbranq

I don't think there's a population of Otonomoi that have suffered more than most under their Human masters more than the Sanbranq, even though they're the largest section of the population. All due to the ongoing Fushelli Civil War.   The machine of war need be fed, and there are many such machines crawling across the continent that Fushell calls home. A hundred warlords with a hundred armies, each needing men to replace deserters, traitors, and casualties of combat and disease, constantly suck up the civilian populace. The Human warlords leave only just enough to make sure the populace doesn't completely dry up and conscript the rest.   The outer towns and cities, as well as the ones in imperial holdings, change hands so often that it's far better to take what an army can carry, rather than try and protect a place for an extended period of time.   From there, the new recruits are dispensed to the warlord's needs. Most will be armed and drilled enough to move with a regimental step, but the others might be set to scavenging the surrounding landscape for supplies, other villages to strip of people and food, or forefathers forbid; another warlord's army so the decision to slink away or fight can be made.   Then, eventually, the warlord who pried them from their home will inevitably be killed. Simply the way of things in a war like that, if it can even be called a war when the sides are as defined as a drop of water freshly landed in a lake. If they survive whatever ambush or field battle delivers their leader to the great beyond, they'll have one of two things. Either fold themselves into the new, victorious, army or take the greatest chance of all and simply try to flee.   I don't know how many actually make it home, but I get the feeling that I would not be encouraged by the number if it can even be measured.

Common Etiquette rules

When attending some sort of function, say something like a marriage or a more simple celebration, it's assumed that attendees are to bring some sort of gift. The expected quality of said gift is dependent on social strata, the level of familiarity the hosts and the guest share, and the general situation of the town, village, or city that all involved are residents of.   This last touchstone is a rather new addition born from the fact that a siege or a roving army can leave the options for gifts rather lacking.

Foods & Cuisine

Staple foods are a few kinds of arid-growing fruit, as well as a sort of sweet rice that naturally grows on the banks of lakes and waterways, called kreowi.

Ideals

Courtship Ideals

Traditionally, it is considered the responsibility of the male to prove himself to any prospective partner. In ages past, this was usually done through the presentation of a dowry as a form of proof of lifestyle and means. This dowry could take the form of straight coin but also came in the form of jewelry, lavish feasts, fine clothing, or anything else that could be used to prove that they're worth the attention.   In the modern era, given the state of the country, the definition of what makes a sufficient dowry has changed with the average person's situation. Now, it may not be a lavish feast but a hearty meal made with ingredients that have been hard to find in town for a long time. A set of long-lasting clothing that will not fall to the degradations of work and weather.     Of course, more well-to-do members of society (though they may be few and far between these days) still maintain the more traditional idea of courtship.
The most common colors for the Light Lines of the Sanbranq are a lavender tone and a rather striking gold color.
