Lascarian
Those that sought safety from the world above in the world below found their way into subway tunnels, basements, bomb shelters and lost cities beneath the rapidly collapsing surface. They survived as they could off what they could scrounge from below; canned food, military rations, any foodstuff that could be rendered palatable, including the dead and fallen. The Lascarian people are scavengers and scrappers, hunting for what little nourishment and value exists in their dark, claustrophobic environments. The weak are quickly culled and left behind, as the strongest and fastest are fed and cared for. Natural selection is not only a biological imperative, but a way of life to the Lascarians. To survive in the darkened tunnels and crawl-ways, often with no avenue for retreat when threats were found, the Lascarians grew smaller in stature; scrawny yet resilient, lithe, and dangerous. In the tight confines they could use the close quarters as an advantage, not a detriment. Those that didn’t develop the keen eyes needed to hunt in the darkness died, as did those that couldn’t stomach the carrion feeding habits of the Lascarian dens and warrens. Far from the sun’s gaze, the Lascarians have grown distant from the culture of other civilizations, and many have reverted to a primitive way of life. They have lost a certain affinity for the brighter environments of the surface. They prefer to stalk the dank tunnels to scrap together the weapons, armor, food and medicine they need to survive, but in tough times, even they must return to the surface to hunt. Be sure though, that for every Lascarian you may find scouting on the surface, there are a dozen more waiting beneath to aid them.
