Bridge | South East Rhone
The BRACKENBRIDGE is an ancient stone bridge that allows travel over the Balus Run between the VARNATH and SHIELDS lands. It is located at the edge of SHIELDS territory and is monitored by the garrison at Greenwarden Keep under the authority of the Valathyn family.
The bridge connects to the THRONEWAY and is extremely sturdy despite its age-which is estimated to be pre-Rhuani-and is over thirty feet in width. Enough space exists to allow two heavy wagons to travel abreast or in opposite directions without concern. At its highest, it sits approximately forty feet over the fast-moving waters of the BALUS RUN.
Gaining Passage Over The Balus Run
To use the bridge, the Shields sentinels charge a nominal toll that is used to supplement the income of the garrison at GREENWARDEN. There are no restrictions on travel for nobles, knights and other verified travelers from Rhone. Mercantile traffic is unimpeded and only rarely do inspections take place--often due to other evidence of malfeasance observed by the bridge warders. It is widely rumored that the primary purpose behind the guard stationed at the bridge is to keep an eye on Shield's neighbors to the north: the VARNATH.
Architecture
The architecture of the bridge is finely-fitted with little signs of mortar or fixing materials. It is built entirely of a hard grey stone that is reportedly found in the GREATSPINE MOUNTAINS. Although the bridge remains solid after untold years, surface weathering has smoothed out any decorative carvings that may have once been present. The various surfaces of the bridge have been smoothed and worn through centuries of use and exposure to the elements. The origin of the bridge is unknown and most folk believe it to be Elder although there persist stories among descendants of the old tribes local to the region of a different origin altogether.
Defenses
The southern side of the bridge is warded by a gate-arm that is monitored by soldiers from the GREENWARDEN garrison. There is often a knight serving as an officer present as well. The bridge has resisted all intentional damage upon it according to local stories. It is said that even several attempts to sabotage it were foiled by its resilience.
