Dragonborn Species in The Emergent Plane | World Anvil

Dragonborn

Classification: Common Race   Dragonborn range in height from 6.5 to 7.5ft tall and average around 250lbs. Their imposing size and often aggressively straightforward personalities can be intimidating to most other races, but Dragonborn are not innately aggressive as a species. Rather, the word that most defines Dragonborn as a species is "Duty". Created by the goddess Alleniel to be paragons of justice, order, and honor, Dragonborn take their oaths extremely seriously, and it's commonly believed that you're more likely to struck by lightning than see the day a Dragonborn goes back on their word. As such, many Dragonborn make their living as either soldiers, mercenaries, or merchants, with most opting for one of the former, as their natural trustworthiness and sense of honor makes them desirable in these professions.   Dragonborn should not be confused with Half-Dragons, though their similar draconic appearance causes many to do so. Half-Dragons are the offspring of a dragon mating with a non-dragon, and often possess the same traits of their chromatic or metallic kin. Dragonborn, ironically, are not descendants of dragons, and while their scales follow the same chromatic or metallic patterns of dragons, the color of a Dragonborn's scales has no bearing on their personality or moral compass. The easiest way to distinguish a Dragonborn from a Half-Dragon is the tail: Half-Dragons have tails, whereas Dragonborn do not.   Dragonborn place honor and duty above all else, and this takes shape within Dragonborn culture in the form of clans. Dragonborn place their clan name before their birth name out of respect for their lineage, and place a very heavy importance in bringing honor to their clan in whatever lifestyle they choose. Possibly the most obvious display of this is a Dragonborn's obsession with perfection: A Dragonborn doesn't just want to be something in life, they want to be the best at whatever lifestyle they choose that any mortal has ever seen. This can make Dragonborn a bit overbearing to some of the more carefree races, as a Dragonborn is rarely, if ever, content with anything less than flawless execution in anything they pursue.   This desire for prominence and expertise makes Dragonborn unlikely to pursue the Arcane Arts, as the erratic nature of magic is antithetical to their predisposition towards perfection. While Dragonborn mages are not necessarily "shunned" in Dragonborn society, others of their kind tend to view their brethren as foolish for wasting their time pursuing perfection in something that they almost definitely cannot achieve perfection in.  It would however be inaccurate to claim that no prejudice against mages exists among the Dragonborn, as the more devout of their kind look upon magic with disdain. Their mother goddess being Alleniel, the goddess of order and law, means that many Dragonborn have a less than appreciative view of magic, as the manipulation of The Weave to perform magic is by its nature bending the "rules" that govern the world. The exception the Dragonborn's begrudging tolerance of magic is Warlocks, who are reviled by much of the Dragonborn race.
