Mirage Wolves
Mirage Wolves are a species of sapient found in the Psychic planet Psycalia, they resemble grey wolves. They are four legged canines that are mostly blue-ish grey, that have a lavender underbelly, along with a blue-violet crystal that grows on their chest, formed from a build up of minerals they are naturally born with. It holds the secret behind the Mirage Wolf's main psychic ability, the power to set up an illusionary version of themselves for others to perceive instead of their real form, unique to each sapient that sees it.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Mirage Wolves have generally canine forms, with four legs, a non-prehensile tail, dog like ears and fairly thick, grey-ish blue fur around most their body. They also with a blueish lavender underbelly, and a mostly flat blueish violet crystal growing out of their chest.
Biological Traits
They are constantly producing a psychic aura that covers their bodies, which casts a illusionary version of themselves, unique to each sapient that sees them. The illusion is said to relay on the seer's own mind to create the final image. Mental illnesses can change how some perceive the wolf. Psychopaths, Sociopaths, and Narcissists see the wolf exactly as is, not buying into the illusion at all, people with anxiety will see the wolf's form change slightly, with small details changing every once and a while, people with psychotic conditions, like paranoia or similar conditions will see the wolf suddenly change forms or almost flicker at times.
Genetics and Reproduction
Mirage wolves reproduce sexually, and produce 3-5 pups per litter. They gestate for around 3 months and typically give birth around the mid-late spring.
Growth Rate & Stages
When Mirage wolves are born, they have minimal fur, only thin fur that blends right in their pink skin, with the mineral deposits in their chests causing them to have slightly rough skin there. Around 1-2 years, more fur starts to grow in, and, around 3-4, it finalizes its color, by this age, their chest crystal finally starts to grow out, showing a small gem, though it takes until they turn 12 and hit puberty that it becomes fully grown.
Ecology and Habitats
Mirage wolves lived near/in the Forests of Psycalia, they were rather good at digging up dens to raise their pups in. They once would often walk at the forest's edge and, due to their ability of appearing different to everyone who sees them, most would end up convincing one another that the wolf was just a hallucination, allowing them to roam free.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Mirage wolves were omnivores, would eat things from nearby berries, to whatever fish were swimming around, to even Psychocybin deer, though when it came to eating them, Mirage wolves had to always take care to not just avoid the mushrooms themselves, but also eating around and removing the roots, which, if eating, could still cause vivid hallucinations. They would also take the chance to eat any lost elementals that were trapped in the delirium caused by the forest.
Biological Cycle
During Spring, Mirage wolves would hang around at the forest's edge, able to easily go after lost, hallucinating prey, as they would wonder in due to the fog preventing them from seeing the danger of the woods, they would also didicate this time into raising their pups espcailly by giving them a chance to hunt themselves before Fall, by Summer they would venture out farther, with the extra fog allowing them more coverage from sight, they would then take the chance to actively chase in targets into forest so they would be rendered unable to fight back and become easy targets with the previously mentioned wolf pups now having learnt to hunt can stock up on enough fat to prepare for winter, by Fall, they would go after mostly Fish and berries instead as the fog started to retreat along with stockpiling as much meat as they could espcailly the meat of bigger targets, and by winter, they would feed off those stores until Spring returned and they could hunt normally again.
Behaviour
Mirage Wolves were generally rather fearless, as their ability that prevents groups of other sapients being able to track and recognize them. They were however, careful aroudn Psychocybin Deer, as they prefered to confuse the deer as much as possible before attacking as to ensure they would not be hit with an attack. They are also rather social, and a can sometimes be a tad bit reckless due to their natural abilities helping to protect them from being easily tracked down.
