Verderén
The Verderén are the halflings of the Verderé hills, which they have settled in a period beginning before the Great Calamity. They were originally brought into the area by the Empire of Oleandron, which encouraged their immigration as a buffer between them and the tribes of the region. The halflings took to the area and soon had developed an impressive network of defenses for their usually quiet valleys. While they never managed to establish a presence beyond the westernmost end of the hills, this was enough for the halflings- at least initially. The halflings' settlement prompted the Fremedhian tribes of the region to push further into Cloriadmen-controlled lands, accelerating their contact. When the Empire of Oleandron fell, the Fraspikans pushed into their old core lands, leaving the flatlands they had previously controlled open. This prompted the rest of the Fremedhian tribes in the hilly areas to come down into the flatlands, leaving the hills barren and almost completely unsettled aside from the Khald Goran. The halflings took advantage of this and began settling the region in huge numbers. The availability of empty land led to many halflings having far more kids than they would otherwise, as latter children had a good chance to grab land to the east. This expansion was sped up as Fraspika conquered part of the western hills and forced the rest to pay tribute. During the period in which Fraspika enforced tribute, the halfling cultures began to slightly diverge, a process which has continued in the region, since Fraspika controls it to this day. This has given rise to three distinct subcultures of Verderén; the Petiliotes, the Thisomma, and the Olasét. These groups are of course similar, but they are not the same.
Petiliotes are the halflings which live in the Kingdom of Fraspika, and have a small presence in the rest of Fremedhia and Blazennia. They are loyal to their human overlords, which has been reinforced by marriage ties over the years. While of course raciall distinct, they view themselves as Fraspikan citizens. Indeed, the lands of the Petiliotes are the only part of Fraspika to have never fallen to foreign invaders, as the legendary Charles Renvois retreated there following the collapse of North Fraspika. Their work in restoring Fraspika is a point of pride for the Petiliotes.
The Thisomma are the halflings which were Fraspikan tributaries at one point. They made a major amount of money shipping goblin slaves north and generally have a more stratified society, having been functioning nations for over 1000 years at this point. The Thisomma are much more focused on halfling purity, and have a distrust of outsiders. Only communties of humans or dwarves who have been there for several centuries are considered trustworthy by most Thisomma.
In contrast are the Olasét, those who took to the road and settled the rest of the Verderé region. They are in general less traditionalist and more accepting of other races, since their lands are a patchwork of humans and dwarves who were there long before the modern halfling majorities in the region. The Verderé migration was halted by conflicts with the Orentesh, and nation of Retiand, especially, has suffered at their hands.
