Tarsin

The Tarsin are a race present in Northern Namarin, and live in a mostly-isolated condition. Physically, the Tarsin have a shriveled up appearance, with many wrinkles and loose-hanging skin. This skin appears dry and is mostly a greyish color. The Tarsin have distinctive orange eyes that contrast disgustingly with their grey skin, though the Tarsin consider this color combination to be very attractive. Tarsin have rather bumpy vertebrae which gives the impression of small, dull spikes on their backs. Tarsin have clawed feet which are somewhat longer than humans and, though their hands are also clawed, having long claws on one's hands is considered uncivilized by most, so they usually keep them well-trimmed. Male Tarsin have long stringy hair that protrudes from the sides and back of their heads while female Tarsin have short hair on most of their head with a vertical strip of varying width being long and stringy, as on the side of the males' heads. All Tarsin hair is grey. Tarsin have dully-pointed ears which are rather thin. Tarsin stand rather tall, being 7 feet on average.
The Tarsin follow a monotheistic religion with many different sects. A Tarsin's sect determines much of their culture. This extends even to recreation, as warlike sects spend more time training in hand-to-hand combat while peaceful sects practice fancy pottery. All Tarsin spend a significant amount of time working on pottery and pottery-making is considered an integral part of their culture.
Tarsin who win victories in battle tend to take the survivors of their enemy as slaves. These slaves are put to work building all manor of structures, including digging and expanding catacombs for the Tarsin dead. These slaves are commonly other Tarsin but very rarely they are travelers from other races. Tarsin usually try to "educate" their slaves on the proper following of their religion. A slave that accepts the religion and converts is freed by the clan and can become an equal member of the society. This minor courtesy is not extended to slaves of different races, as they are considered lesser beings.
Tarsin may loathe the other sects of their religion, but they view the followers as misguided. In contrast, other races are considered inherently evil. Tarsins hate other races so much that if there were to be a large-scale foreign invasion of the Tarsin lands by another race, all tribes would band together to expel the invaders. Tarsin also refuse all trade or contact with outsiders and cannot be reasoned with.
When a Tarsin dies, their clan performs complex death rituals. First, the body of the deceased Tarsin is folded into a small size. Next, a pot is crafted around them and decorated, then fired- usually incinerating the body inside. A priest will then fill the pot with precious water, herbs, and psychedelics. This priest will then drink the water and go on a spiritual journey to guide the spirit to the afterlife. The pot is them placed in a catacombs, which may be communal or familial. This death ritual is very taxing on the priest and they are usually extensively trained.
