South Fraspika

South Fraspika was both blessed and cursed in the Fraspikan partition, being sandwiched in between its sister kingdoms, the coastline, and verious tributaries. This protected them from external threats, but also made it very hard to expand. Due to this, South Fraspika neglected its land army and focused on naval pursuits, becoming the strongest navy in the continent for the entirety of its existence. South Fraspika made a number of trading agreements with Gnomes, and invited them to settle, making them a technological hub. However, with the fall of North Fraspika they would become exposed to the Khanate of Clesentia and were unable to muster a powerful enough military to stop the centaur invasion. Their large, poorly defended northern frontier was extremely vulernable and essentially impossible to defend, leading to centaurs pouring in. Their famed navy was near useless in a land war and much of it ended up being torched to stop the centaurs from getting ahold of it. The rest ended up sold to Gnomes for a bargain, or else fled to isolated holdings and waited the wars out there. Many of these ships fled to what would become theĀ Grand Duchy of Barloem, bolstering the young country's navy.

History

South Fraspika had just one king for its entire existence. Lasting from 1164 to 1211, it was reigned over by Theodar I "the strategist" who was noted for his long-term planning. Theodar, as the middle child of Martin I of Old Faspika, was 29 when he became king. Only two years younger than his brother, Theodar was an adventurous youth, who seemed to be skilled at everything he tried, except military matters. He was far to cautious and would always be defeated by both his older brother and even his younger brother once he was old enough. Theodar was very interested in economics, and after becoming king worked hard to make South Fraspika the economic center of the brother kingdoms. He cleared lands for mining operations and established a strong industry making weapons, which would often be sold west. Theodar left the command of the military in the hands of trusted lieutenants, but he made sure it was well supplied with weapons and horses. As for the navy, he hired and made contacts with Gnomish shipbuilders. Theodar was not particularly interested in expansion, and wished to forge strong ties with his brothers instead of fighting to reunify Fraspika. Two of his three of his daughters were married to children of his brothers, and his second son was married to the adopted daughter of a prominent Gnomish merchant family. For his eldest son, he wished to find an even more prestigious match. His eldest son, however, would pre-empt this when he fell in love with a woman who came from the tributaries. His father grudgingly accepted her, but was never truly happy with the match up.
Theodar has only one questionable spot on the otherwise calm and legalistic rule, and that was his relationship with his half-elf half-aunt Hella. His grandfather Lothaire was well-known for his many elven mistresses, and Hella was the child of one of these. Hella, despite being his half aunt, was actually a few years younger than Theodar, and the two fell in love in their teens. When she became pregnant, they were swiftly wed and sent away for a time, but people did question the legitimacy of the marriage due to the circumstances. Even when she's younger than you and has a different mother, it's still creepy and weird to marry your aunt.
Theodar's kingdom held up against the Centaurs for a few years after their invasion began in 1208, but the plains are not good for defending against a centaur charge. He was executed along with his sons and grandsons in 1211, marking the end of his male line. At age 76, he likely did not have long to live anyways, his wife having died 7 years earlier at 66.
