Solar Elves

"I mean, magic's cool and all but have you seen the sun. Pretty damn awesome, a shame we can't use it to blow stuff up, I'd love to throw a mini sun at some trolls. I imagine it'd be like fireball but BIG." - Musings of a sun elf who may have gotten sunstroke

Solar elves love the heat. Possessing an affinity for fire, earth, and storm magic, most sun elves live in hot and dry areas, preferring to avoid humid areas like jungles. Nonetheless, Solar Elves often stay on the edges of deserts, as isolating themselves in the desert makes it difficult to trade, farm, or maintain livestock. Solar Elves have long been considered the most warlike of all elves, and their Solar Legions are feared throughout the lands. Solar elves can be easily identified by their bronze skin, light hair, and blazing blue or stormy eyes.
Solar Elves were split from their brethren during the destruction of Salazuir, and were members of an elven army being sent to protect the colonies from Feykin. With their transporters borken by the fall of Salazuir mid-transit, they latched on to the closest magical hotspot they could find to avoid being sucked into a new dimension, which turned out to be genies. The group of elves therefore ended up landing in the deserts of Ærellion, in an area mostly devoid of settlement due to the presence of genies, and quickly came to dominate the river valley. They made treaties with the genies to avoid conflict, which led to a gradual migration south, putting them in the path of the jungle trolls. Over time their population would grow larger and reach a point where they became factionalized, forming new kingdoms around old captains, generals, or minitary units. These kingdoms became enemies and fought amongst one another, forming the militarized society which came to define their culture. Eventually, in between their fights with one another, the Solar Elves pushed the trolls out of the savanna and into the tropical regions, securing the area for themselves. They would also clash with the regional humans who took advantage of the end of trollish dominance to attempt to claim these lands for themselves. Though the crisis ended in a victory for the Solar Elves, it led to great societal conflict as those who wished to form better relations with humans began to be viewed viewed with suspicion. Around this time, the elves also pushed to the coast, making contact with the Ægyian city states. At this point, the eastern and western borders of the Solar Elven domain became centers of pro-human elves while the center was staunchly elven supremacist. During this period, the Solar Elves were in a great internal struggle and began to be harassed by trolls once more.
By the year 0, the Solar Elves had a number of trade relations with the Ægyians and from there they had made contact with the Gnomes. Hence, when the Gnomes were looking for places to transport the Dark Elves, they offered the troll forests, in the hopes that the Dark Elves would fight the trolls for them. They had been unable to truly deal with the troll menace due to their internal issues, but figured the Dark Elves would be an effective buffer. In this, they were correct. However, the Dark Elves preferred to settle along the coastline, and so they would have little impact on the troll population outside that region for many years to come.
The failure of the buffer plan for the most part, with a few exceptions, as well as the continuing bipolarity of Solar Elven society created the perfect conditions for a crackdown by authoritarian rulers and the clergy, who collaborated in a trans-national effort to root out those who they blamed for social malaise, even in the central kingdoms where there were few human-sympathisers (though hertical teachings were common). Since the more liberal elves were not organized or even intending to revolt, the result was a total destruction of these ideals and the establishment of a harsh feudal structure, cementing the monarchist rule of the kingdoms. However, a number of regions which had sympathetic rulers allowed a huge number of refugees to escape, with the main body fleeting to the coastline. As the other kingdoms had removed their undesireables, they refused to assist the coastal kingdoms with this issue, and the coastal kingdoms were defeated in battle by these refugees in almost ever assault they made, thus leaving the coastline as a haven for liberal thought. In time, the coastal refugees would form into city-states, which were neither liberal or particularly kind to humans, but the legacy of the flight remains a central part of their societies. More recently, the city states have started establishing a colonial presence on Ifyrial, netting them great wealth as well as the ire of the elven supremacists, who remain agrarian and isolationist. A second, though much smaller population of elves would flee east and inland, where they would play a small role in the Ursumar Empires that came to control much of the region, some supporting the Empires and others siding with the local humans. By now, many of these elves have been assimilated, but there is some legacy of elven blood within the region, and a few communities of half-elves or full elves do exist.
