Republic of Doletra
Doletra is a tiny republic located along the banks of the upper portion of the Arcesiel River, and operates as a sort of mercenary nation. Doletran mercenaries, however, are not typical mercenaries who fight fellow men for money. Instead, the Doletran Mercenaries are payed to eradicate monsters, from trolls to dragons, and are the finest in the lands for this sort of work.
History
The Republic of Doletra was established in 1719 on land newly-taken from trolls, as part of an effort by a local noble of Alistród. Originally, the nobleman would keep his new possessions as a barony under the governance of Pryzelfów, but essentially neglected the area and ruled through local councils. This hands off rule lead to several anti-monster orders basing themselves in the region due to it being lightly governed and on the frontier. After a few generations of similarly hands-off rule, the line of the barony died out and their lands were taken over directly by the crown. Never being more than nominally a part of Pryzelfów, the people of Doletra would decide to not accept the monarchy and forged their own destiny. However, they had to wait to declare full independence, settling for being an autonomous region. They chose to elect the Grand Captain of one of the many mercenary orders present as their new leader, and this would stick- the leader of the township (now republic) has since been known as the Grand Captain, even when they were not a mercenary or former mercenary. When the Kingdom of Krókłość reintegrated attacked the anti-Krókłoś coalition which included Pryzelfów, Doletra sided with Krókłość and declared itself an independent republic. Pryzelfów, concerned about the possibility of a Krókłoś invasion should they march their forces in to deal with the rebels, was forced to accede to this demand. Doletra, while having a small population, boasts a rather large standing army; their mercenaries are far better trained than the peasant levies of their potential foes. After all, what does one have to fear from man after facing off against a horde of trolls? It should also be noted that Doletra occasionally comes under threat of centaur raids, though far more often there is limited cross-border trade.
