North Fraspika

North Fraspika was formed around original heartland of Old Fraspika, and kept possession of the royal capital of Couélion. This granted them the strongest de jure claim to unify Fraspika, which was compounded by being ruled by the eldest branch of the Carlois dynasty. For the most part, North Fraspika neglected military affairs, instead attempting to get West Fraspika to assist them in invading South Fraspika, whose wealthy port cities they coveted. This is because North Fraspika was completely landlocked and lacked an efficient trade route to the sea, having to go through Central Fraspika. Due to neglecting their marches along the Plaires Centralis, the North Fraspikans were ill-prepared for the military campaigns of the Khanate of Clesentia, and fell within two years.

History

North Fraspika existed for only 40 years, and was the shortest-lived of the three brother kingdoms. It was first ruled by Jean I, the eldest son of Martin I of Old Fraspika. Jean, as the eldest son, was well-trained in bureaucracy but was also lazy and hedonistic. Jean, possibly thanks to elven influence, considered the Fraspikan practice of taking multiple wives to be barbaric and banned the practice in his kingdom. However, this did not stop him from having at least 5 mistresses throughout his lifespan (in fact, the famed Renvois dynasty is probably descended from one of these affairs). Jean I was very interested in architecture, and planned a massive renovation of the capital which was completed by drawing funds from the military. As a very ironic side affect of banning polygamy, there were less wifeless men and therefore less people who wanted to go fight (though also less unrest and crime). Jean, instead of actually worrying, just directed the nobility on the border use levies in times of war.
When Jean died at age 45 in 1178, he left just one legitimate male child, Martin II. unlike Jean, who was a mix between brilliant and terrible, Martin was an absolute asshole, drunkard, and just all around crap. He was even racist towards halflings for no apparent reason other than hating short people. Martin was married to his South Fraspikan cousin Clotilde at the behest of his father. By all accounts he was abusive and possibly caused several miscarriages. After he finally had a child, a daughter, he tried to betroth her to one of the children of his West Fraspikan counterpart in exchange for a joint invasion of his father in law's kingdom (South Fraspika). When this plan was refused, Martin gave up on military conquest, as he did not want to engage South Fraspika in an even fight. Thereafter, Martin hated both West and South Fraspika, and refused to meet with any member of the Carlois dynasty that was from either of these countries. Martin attempted to send several expeditions into the Cianwood, all of which failed, losing valuable men. After the third attempt, he finally decided to stop, but for the rest of his life his main goal was always to figure out a way to crush Cianheart. Because of this, he neglected the northern frontiers, which allowed the centaurs easy access to the country. Their invasion in 1203 terrified Martin, and he suffered from a nervous breakdown. According to legend, Martin believed that the Elves had come out of the Cianwood for his head and sequestered himself in the palace. He also refused to call for aid from West or South Fraspika because he had decided that they would try to coup him instead of helping in the fight. His marshals tried to fight the Centaurs alone, but within a year their armies were spent. In 1204 the Centaurs reached Couélion and sacked it. They found Martin in the palace with his daughter and wife, all others having fled. Martin tried to sell his wife and daughter to the centaurs in exchange for his life, but they were disgusted by his dishonorable behavior and had him beheaded. He was slain by the Khan himself and his wife and daughter were allowed then to leave. This marked the end of North Fraspika, and without the actions of Charles Renvois, may have also ended all of Fraspika. Charles gathered the remains of the army and fled to the hills, where he successfully resisted the centaurs.
