Night Waifs

Night waifs are the only waif to be a pale black instead of pale white. Their eyes are also red, and they are much more sensitive to sunlight than the other species of waif. Therefore, they are entirely nocturnal, so when they have to go out during the day they need to make sure all skin is covered. Night waifs are the smallest of all waifs and also physically the weakest. However, night waifs have long fangs that are very dangerous; they will not hesitate to use them if attacked. They eat far more meat than other waifs, with medium rare meat being their preferred taste (they like it bloody). Night waifs are rather similar to vampires, and some have speculated that they are merely a vampiric form of waif, though this theory can be proven scientifically false. Night waifs also have the most sensitive emotional abilities, and unlike other waifs, can sense presences, though this can be overwhelming when there are many animals all around. Once they distinguish a target, they can then pick out their emotions individually. Night waifs generally inhabit the more forested regions in the western portion of the waif island, and are very reclusive beyond their family groups. Night waifs are very violent when they are interrupted during hunts, feasts, and cultural activities, so they should be approached cautiously. They can be very irritable during the day, since they normally sleep during daytime, so their actions during night should take precedence over daytime meetings. Their courtship patterns are very long and drawn-out, with both parties leaving gifts over a period of many months before any real advances are made. While this keeps their population low, it should also be noted that Night Waifs have some of the strongest and most healthy marriages in all of the eighth realm- both because they are based on mutual respect and shared interest in one another, and because they rarely fight amongst one another. Once a night waifs couple finalizes their relationship, they will often move out of their family group to start a new one. This is not always the case, though, and some family groups consist of grandparents down. It should also be noted that once elderly night waifs are unable to hunt anymore, they will usually find their way to their descendants and perform other tasks. This process is not always guaranteed, as many elderly night waifs become accustomed to complete solitude and therefore refuse contact with others.
