Hold of Bhur Drizl
Bhur Drizl, known as Thistlehill to the humans, is a Dwarven nations along the western coast of Alcedina. Bhur Drizl is relatively multicultural from a Dwarven standpoint, and maintains extensive trade routes and, unusually for a dwarven state, a powerful navy. It is important to note that Bhur Drizl is the only coastal holding of Dwarves on Telgren, and is thus in a unique position.
History
Bhur Drizl was formed during the fall of Oleandron. The region was originally settled primarily by dwarves who were encouraged by the Empire to mine the rich hills of the region and to bolster the western region of the empire, which at the time was far inferior to the east. Halflings would follow the dwarves, drawn by the dwarven need for crops. Upon arrival, the halflings realized the hills were perfect for growing grapes, and a flourishing wine business soon sprung up, drawing elven nobility to the region as well. The racial plurality of the empire soon manifested in the arrival of humans to fill other positions in the region. The area, originally called Bhur Drizl by the dwarves, was translated to Thistlehill by humans. While the region never approached the population of Isileum, its location at the mouth of the Azranen river made it an entrepot, and it remained prosperous throughout the Empire's lifespan.
During the Westsfall, the region was menaced, but thanks to the natural defense of the hill, mountains, and the hold itself, there was little loss of life, though property damage was serious around the mouth of the Azranen. The city there would not recover, and the Bhur Drizl hold itself would once against become the main center of the region. While the manors of the elven nobility survived the attacks, being mostly located in the hills, the exile of the nobility themselves in 767 SC left them vacant, and they were mostly left to fall apart. Some were taken by enterprising halflings who became the new nobility of the surface, but the upkeep of the mansions led many to ruination. With their mountains and hills cut off from the rest of West Oleandron, Bhur Drizl decreed itself independent with little fanfare. The council of dwarves in control of the settlements reached an accord with those on the surface for a unified nations, but the dwarves made it clear who was in charge. The leader of the nation was to always be a dwarf, though his second in command did not have to be. The council was expanded to include a minister of the surface, who alongside the second in command have historically not been dwarves.
The young nation saw a flood of refugees, mainly humans, though with some elves. While the elves mostly migrated to elven-majority regions shortly after, the human refugees blended with the population already there. Under the protections of the Dwarves, the humans there are some of the last remnants of the imperials, mostly having been assimilated elsewhere. Bhur Drizl has long maintained a friendship with the city of Isileum, to the point where (depending on their respective strengths at the time) some have commented that one or the other is in the sphere of influence of the other. Bhur Drizl has largely welcomed the seizure of Erleting coastal lands in recent years, though they prefer to not get involved in such wars themselves- at least for now.
