Hill Waifs
Hill waifs are taller than most waifs, and are the most physically powerful waifs. Though still smaller than most other races, hill waifs are able to compete in a typical battle much the same as others. Hill waifs live mostly on the eastern portion of the waif island, and typically fight amongst each otherĀ for land, status, and honor. Still, they remain fundamentally a tribal culture, though their tribes are different than that of other races. In hill waifs culture, tribes are a choice, as when waifs get married they can change tribes to any other tribe to represent the new union. Certain tribes specialize in different activities, though all tribes are diverse. Each hill waif nation is a collection of tribes. Physically, hill waifs have long whiskers that are sensitive, and have ridges on their head, which, besides their height, is their distinguishing factor. Hill waifs have the least sensitive senses of all waifs, though their abilities still far outstretch other races. Their less sensitive senses help them not be blinded and deafened when fighting between two nations occurs, but does weaken their magical abilities. For this, they are looked down upon by Marble Waifs, who have no qualms enslaving and "re-educating" Hill Waifs, for their own good, of course. This means that relations between the two sub races can be stormy at times, and sometimes this does lead to fighting. Still, Hill Waifs prefer to avoid conflict outside of other Hill Waifs, as they do not want to get distracted.
When Hill Waif nations fight amongst themselves, the winner will usually gain tribute in the form of goods and people alongside the best lands of the loser. Those sent as tribute become slaves, but can eventually become freed by serving their new nation well or by intermarrying with the tribe. Rebellious slaves may be sent to the Marble waifs, depending on the location of the tribe. Because nations are composed of different tribes who work together and not a settled population, Hills waifs cannot necessarily always control their full land, so usually nations will exchange or swap lands instead of merely taking them over. However, with enough power a nation could in theory overtake the others.
One thing that differentiates different Hill Waif nations are their marriage customs. Tribes which have a shortage of males due to losses in warfare tend to become more polyamorous over time, while those who gain enough captives to replace typically use them to supplant their original population and keep it stable. This cycle usually keeps the stronger nations on top, as losing male population does become a compounding problem the more a nation loses.
