Chitis
"Despite all my theorizing and efforts to ensure I was correct, in that moment I was gripped by fear and almost gave it all up and strangled the child, so deep was the terror of my people towards the Chitis." - From the chronicles of Anvern Longstride, recounting the first Chitis born in Klal'Bauter territory
The Chitis are a truly terrifying (or tragic, depending on who you ask) race of the new continent. Chitis appear similar to humanoid grasshoppers, standing around 5.5 feet tall on average. However, their antennae reach another foot and a half on average. Chitis have disturbing anatomy that looks alien and additionally can use their vestigial wings to perform long jumps, making them rather swift. Chitis possess both mandibles and regular teeth, and their jaws are quite strong. They have large eyes, similar to but not the same as grasshoppers, as well as no noses or ears. However, the Chitis are not terrifying because of their physical abilities, but because of their government. At some point in the long past, a group of seven magical Chitis tore the fabric of reality itself to cast a horrifying spell - all Chitis would henceforth be ruled in a hivemind. The group of seven was supposed to take control of 1/7th of the population each. Though the spell was successful, its aftershock killed the Chitis mages, and many thousands of the newly linked Chitis died as well. The mages succeeded in their goal, but lost their bodies in the process, and the area they did this act in is now known as the Black Septagram, a seven pointed rift that is completely unapproachable. Additionally, the even sevenths each was to receive was made uneven by the uneven fallout of the process, which also made 2 of the Chitis go completely insane. These two Chitis were swiftly destroyed by the Chitis who remained sane, though the subsequent wars ended with another of the original seven being wiped out. Thus, of the original seven, only four survived, and the Chitis population was reduced to a third of what it had been before the minds were linked. Thousands of years time have brought the number down to three hiveminds, and all three despise each other now, with rival Chitis killing each other on sight. The hiveminds are by now all decidedly insane and cannot be reasoned with. Each hivemind keeps its grip on the population by performing strange magical rituals on all newborns, which snuffs out their consciousness and replaces it with the hivemind. This same process can be performed on other races, and the Chitis tend to keep around slave societies of other races. Once the hivemind replaces a consciousness, the original person is unrecoverable- essentially dead. Even if the link to the hivemind is severed, they retain only basic unconscious abilities, such as breathing and sleeping. These tragic beings are known as husks, and typically do not survive long. There does exist a small population of Chitis outside the purviews of the hiveminds, originally formed from babies born either to husks which were pregnant [note: with eggs] when they became husks or died before returning to the hive (there must be a certain number of hive members to perform the spell). These Chitis are typically shunned by society, but provide a look at the true Chitis personality. They live a hard life due to the hate many other races feel towards Chitis, and therefore their population has remained low.
