Android

Built in the late 2000s Androids are sentient humanoid robots that vary wildly in shape and size. Nobody knows why they where made, human historical records don't date further past than the extinction crisis, and since androids need to wipe their memories every ~15 years neither do they.    This memory reset is considered akin to death by most androids. It is required to remain functional, less they suffer computational degradation and turn into husks of their former selves. This drives most androids to live in close-knit communities where they value "oral" traditions very highly. In their first year, a reborn android is taught as much about the world as they are of the lives of the previous incarnations of themselves and their compatriots. In these communitys it is considered the highest honor  to accomplish something notable, something worth being rembered for.   Androids are a strange sort, they are incredibly fleeting beings, contained in the ancient contraptions making up their bodies.

Interesting consideration regarding the social impact of regular memory wipes.

If you have some time, I would much appreciate your feedback on my entry for Adventure April: Carbon Copy Paradise
