When the front of the Krising War broke after the events at Lohenz, orc raiders surged across the border and into the Republic of Murne. Attempts by the Murnean Home Army to repel the raiders failed due to a variety of reasons, most of which are attributed to the strange infectious madness that the orcs carried with them from the front. Regardless of the causes, the Republic fell to chaos and splintered into smaller states. Order in these states is maintained primarily through harsh authoritarian rule, the dictators of which are almost all high ranking officers in the home army. Life in the new Murenan Stats is of dour quality, largely in part due to the breakup of the central republic government. The Murnean paper currency of the republic era is now worthless and many states have resorted to a barter economy in lieu of any hard coinage for trade. Widespread devastation caused first by orc raiders and later foreign looters has left the once prosperous farmlands near the Haygwynell border unable to reach their republic era output, forcing the survivors into a lifestyle of subsistance farming that was last seen decades prior.
Danger is everpresent in the Murnean States. Clashes between different military leaders, mercenary companies, bands of looters, and roving orc warbands means conflicts is a daily occurrence. This has led to a continual mass exodus of people from the states in the five years since the republic shattered, flooding other countries with refugees and creating what many have called the greatest refugee crisis in the history of Soln. Many of those seeking asylum are non-human, due to the severe persecution they face at the hands of the humanocentric state governments. As perhaps a symptom of this focus humanity above all else, the Criscarian Church has well surpassed the Conclave of Saints to become the primary religion in the region. Their influence is strong enough that one of the states, West Schaffsland, is under the control of Grand Cardinal Abram Holzfet, a ranking member of the church.
