The volcanic eruption of Mt. Gelzibom in the Katra Mountains, covered Katrapetch in a thick layer of ash and badly disrupted life in the city for months afterwards. This may have been a side effect of arcane experiments in the Fire Kingdoms similar to the spells used on Mt. Defiance.
