The Melancholia

The Melancholia is both a name for a condition and a region in the east of the continent of Myruthea on Magicians' End, which became uninhabitable in the late sixth millenium APC.
The region is roughly centred on the old ruined city of Ralsimoor. Within the Melancholia, a pervasive sense of existential angst sinks into the heart of all humanity. It is impossible to maintain the will to struggle and strive against fate or even, as the condition worsens, to continue the quotidian necessities of living.
Ixthamon's dreadful attack on Ralsimoor in 5937 APC resulted in the imposition of this pernicious mental zone, a state conducive only to surrender. Within a few years, the land that is now described as the Melancholia, was soon abandoned to wind and weather.
Whilst it is possible to cross the zone of the Melancholia safely, if you know what you are doing, few will brave it, even to this day.
