The Covenant of Nourished Souls
The Covevant of Nourished Souls is a religious and charitable institution based at the Houses of the Hungry in the city of Klaractazum (illustrated in the image at the head of this article).
Culture
The Covenant has two philosophical positions which are the twin focus of its endeavours and complement one another. To begin with, the Houses of the Hungry, which is the spiritual home of the Covenant, is primarily a centre for peaceful contemplation and commemoration. Although it originated in a desire to honour the memory of those who perished from starvation at Klaractazum during the Age of the Long Famine, in the centuries that have passed since, this perspective has broadened to encompass a wider range of physical and emotional suffering, so that the Houses of the Hungry now provide succour for all kinds of spiritual hunger and loss.
A second ideal is the alleviation of contemporary distress through social welfare. The Covevant maintains a number of charitable programs to feed the poor and plays in active role in political campaigning on their behalf.
History
In the later years of the Time of Terrors, the Covenant often found itself working in opposition to the leader Emile Bontater (aka Bontater the Fat) and was particularly important in providing a covert centre of resistance during the frightening years when Emile's White Hunger spread throughout the city.
A sense of the fears of this time is captured in Pamelle South's famous novel "In the Houses of the Hungry", which although it was written almost a thousand years later during the Age of Shadows is widely considered to be a well researched and historically faithful tale that has come to shape public perceptions of the period.
