Scents of the Year

January welcomes the new year with the tickle of champaign and lingering firework smoke.
Old pine and spiced fruit fade in the background of cheers and jubilation.
The icy crisp air only intensifies as it continues to sting the airways.     Sugary sweets and a loved one's embrace fill the short days of February.
While homes grow musty, longing for the return of fresh air.
Spring feels both close and too far, the air still agonizingly wet and cold.     March drags winter on with the overwhelming smell of wet muddy slush.
Snow soon turns to rain and the slush's scent only melds with the earthy tones of pavement.
Hints of grass and early blooms dance teasingly on the breeze.     Intense showers wash away the remnants of winter as April breathes the freshest spring air.
Aromatic flowers color the once dreary landscape, beckoning folks to leave their abodes.
The still damp earth wriggles to life with worms and insects as the season explodes with life.     May envelopes the soul with sunshine and clean linen drying in the afternoon's warmth.
Fresh cut grass and pollen oversaturate the air, a dizzying effect to some.
The days begin to lengthen, calling out for a dance under the clear sky.     Cheers from students fill the air as June's growing heat ushers in summer.
Adventurous trips await those able and yearning to get lost in world, even if just for a moment.
Assorted delicacies of picnics and fairs entice with mouth watering aromas and flavors.     July brings smoked meats and frozen treats, their smells soaking deep into one's clothes.
The lake breeze carries scents of algae and fish as more colorful explosions dot the night sky.
Summer storms hit the senses with intense ozone spiked wet asphalt that summons more worms.     Bonfires and smores continue during August nights, enhanced by laughter of close friends.
Forests beckon with their damp and familiar earthy tones to campers of all ages.
Summer's end draws ever closer as we watch fireflies dance over the fields, cold drinks in hand.     Crisp apples and new supplies follow students back to school as September kills the heat.
Autumn begins as the trees burst to life in the colorful hues of imaginary flames.
The chill air carries hints of wet foliage and fresh produce through the rustic streets.     October nights grow colder as folks huddle closer, pumpkin spice ever pungent in the air.
Leaves crunch underfoot on walks through town, magical shops whispering to come closer.
Cider and treats a plenty keep the ghouls at bay as the spooky month draws to a close.     A different warmth envelops November in the presence of loved ones and gratitude.
We spy on barren trees through closed windows, hot tea warming hands and souls.
Homes grow saturated with the varied scents of large feasts as winter looms overhead.     December continues the joy of the season with more spiced drinks and fresh baked goods.
The snow comes all too soon, the sharp winter air returning once more to pierce our cores.
Fireplaces crackle to life in pine infused homes as families gather to celebrate the end and beginning.     Another year has come and gone, carrying with it many memories and stories.
I wonder what sort of pallet next year will bring.

The year varies for everyone depending on where you live. This was written from my perspective of growing up / currently living in the Finger Lake region of NY.
