The False Peaks
A mountain range arranged in a ring in the center of Venathel. These peaks have been found to be artificial within the last few hundred years, and attempts to dig into the mountainsides have been met with nothing but failure. Most believe them to be ruins left behind by the ancients, enigmatic beings that inhabited this land before recorded history. Recently building on new houses has begun around the rim of the false peaks, acting as housing for the archeologists responsible for discovering the purpose of these ancient ruins. Despite having researched for hundreds of years, however, we've learned absolutely nothing.
Purpose / Function
The original purpose of the false peaks is unknown, but researchers theorize they were likely used in ancient religious rituals, and some philosophers speculate that the mountains were built as high as they were to be closer to the heavens. This is a very human way of thinking, and I believe it to be misguided.
Alterations
Although the peaks can't be penetrated by any tools currently available to us, we have begun building around the outsides of them. This causes difficulty, as foundations cannot be built into the mountains themselves, but the peaks have proven to be completely stable during tremors, which makes them an excellent location for earthquake-proof homes.
Architecture
The mountains thenselves are plain and smooth, made of an unrecognizable material that somewhat resembles stone. They seem to have been made with no imperfections, which even with current technology would be a remarkable feat.
History
The false peaks were likely created by the ancients, and have been around for all of recorded history. The nature of the peaks was first discovered in 317 by Brynhilde Stravos, an archeologist who specialized in relics left behind by the ancients. She theorized they were likely the missing piece of the greatest mystery of the ancients, the question on everyone's minds: where did they go? She suggested the peaks were more than likely their burial grounds. I think that's more likely than anything else that has been suggested.
