He does not have any of the Pixie abilities that his brother has, but he did inherit a few traits. His night vision is better than a human's, and he leans towards being nocturnal. He can feel his twin brother through their bond, or Hakkesho. And somehow he is able to resist magic extremely well. While he is conscious, Mindwalkers cannot penetrate his mind, Pixies cannot hold him, magical effects from gauntlets don't hurt him. The Wizards have given this rare ability a name-- Voidant. He's just.... good at avoiding magic.
Adaki spent his childhood on the Drache estate as Josef Drache III, his father's sole heir.
Became best friends with Neil Heilend, spent a lot of time with him and the Heilend family. They treated him like one of their own, and were basically the only source of love he had.
His father was terrible, usually not around, but when he was, he was a miserable drunk who liked to abuse Adaki physically and mentally.
At first, as a child, Adaki attempted to conceal when his father hurt him, although the servants at the estate knew the truth, including Neil's parents. As he got older, Neil figured things out, and Adaki confided in him. The two became even closer, considering themselves to be brothers.
Adaki gradually became more resentful and rebellious against his father, although he was still too afraid to face Lord Drache outright. Neil, on the other hand, struggled with his pride and his temper, often getting into trouble with authority on the estate, particularly Lord Drache and those servants higher up in power who he felt should have done more to help Adaki.
As Adaki approached sixteen, he began having strange dreams where he was visited by the ghost of his Pixie mother, Zevi of Swifts. He had no idea he was half-pixie. Lord Drache had either replaced all the servants who knew that Adaki's mother was Pixie, or, like with the Heilends, threatened them into silence. The Heilends had kept it from Neil and Adaki to keep them safe, not wanting them to try to contact the Pixies for fear of what Lord Drache would do in retaliation. As Adaki interacted more with Zevi, she shared more with him, including the information that he had a twin brother named Gadianton. Adaki, miserable in his current circumstances and desperate for an escape he was not quite brave enough for, latched onto her immediately and believed her without question.
When told about Zevi, Neil wasn't so sure he believed it at first, but then he saw the ghost for himself. He still wasn't sure he trusted her motivations. He tried to advise Adaki to be cautious, but Adaki was obsessed with learning about his legacy. He and Neil did some investigating on their own, locating paperwork confirming Zevi's story and the existence of Gadianton. Neil confronted his parents about it, and they told what they knew, apologizing for keeping the secret for so long. Neil was more hurt than Adaki by this, really; Adaki was willing to forgive them because he was so happy to learn about his brother, and Neil came around eventually.
The Heilends told them that Gadianton had been taken away and given to a Pixie tribe that sometimes traveled near the estate, since his eyes were green and Lord Drache had threatened to kill the baby if he was a Pixie. Adaki, of course, wanted to immediately track these Pixies down. While Lord Drache was away, he and Neil snuck away from the Estate to find them, against Neil's better judgement. They did find some Pixies, but they were not the ones the Heilends had told them about; apparently, that tribe of Pixies had all perished several years previously in a fire. Adaki was devastated, and he almost decided to stay with the Pixies and never return home, but Neil talked him out of it, afraid that Lord Drache would come down on his parents if he realized what they had told Adaki.
When they return to the estate, maybe because of this trip, or maybe because later on Adaki confronts his father about his brother/mother (not sure yet), Adaki's father flies into a rage and wounds Adaki across the face, blinding his right eye and scarring him badly (in every meaning of the word...). Soon after, just a couple weeks, Lord Drache insists that Adaki compete in a jousting match, even though he is not physically recovered yet and has always been terrible at jousting anyway. Neil thinks it's outrageous, and in his anger, he impersonates Adaki and rides in the match in his place. As punishment, Neil is branded (preventing him from becoming a doctor as he had trained to be), and exiled from the estate completely; another devastating blow to Adaki.
This is when Zevi begins planting the idea in his head that he should kill his father, but at first, Adaki is not willing to do it. Finally, Zevi comes to him in a dream and desperately pleads with him to go to Gadianton's aid; she knows where he is and he is in trouble. Adaki goes to leave and is caught by his father, and he kills him in a fight. He runs to Neil in a panic, not sure what to do, Neil wants him to go to the city and tell everyone the truth about what happened to his father, but Adaki decides he doesn't have time, he has to ride to the Wastes to find his brother. He orders Neil to stay behind and tell whatever story he has to to protect himself and the Heilends. He rides off into the Wastes, alone except for the spectral wolf that is his mother's ghost, guiding him as far as she can.
