Velgra, Hakkak
Velgra, the capital of Hakkak, sprawls across the neck of the peninsula, a testament to the uneasy yet powerful alliance of orc and human clans. The city isn't a unified architectural marvel, but rather a collection of distinct districts, each reflecting the dominant clan's culture and building style, stitched together by rough-hewn roads and the ever-present scent of smoke and iron. The city is bisected by the Grimgash River, which flows swiftly from the highlands to the sea, further emphasizing the city's dual nature.
Government
Located in the Hall of Skulls, accessible by a heavily guarded bridge underground, stands the Tribunal Hall. This imposing structure is a blend of orcish and human design, symbolizing the alliance of the two races. Inside, the representatives of the Hakkak clans gather twice a year to debate policy, settle disputes, and engage in ritual combat to solidify alliances. The Tribunal Hall is a place of both political intrigue and brutal displays of strength, reflecting the complex nature of Hakkak society.
Defences
Velgra is heavily fortified, with a massive wall encircling the city. The wall is built of a combination of stone and timber, incorporating both orcish and human engineering techniques. Strategic points along the wall are manned by watchtowers, manned by members of different clans, ensuring that all have a hand in the city's defense.
Districts
Grimfang: Dominated by rough-hewn stone structures, often adorned with trophies of bone and tusk. Buildings are functional and imposing, emphasizing strength and defense. The air here is thick with the smell of roasting meat and the clang of forges. The largest structure is the Hall of Skulls, a massive mead hall where orcish clans gather to celebrate victories and mourn losses. Think less polished stone and more raw, functional might. Tattoos and war paint are prevalent here, and the sounds of boisterous laughter and challenges echo through the streets.
Sunstone: A mix of timber-framed buildings and more recently, some stone structures influenced by orcish architecture. Human architecture tends towards practicality, but with a touch more artistry than the orcish. The Market of a Thousand Blades is the heart of this district, a sprawling marketplace where weapons, armor, and other goods from across Hakkak are traded. The Sunstone Citadel, a former elven outpost captured centuries ago, now serves as the seat of the human clans' leadership. The atmosphere is more bustling and mercantile than Grimfang, with a focus on trade and craftsmanship.
The Crossroads: A melting pot of cultures, this district reflects the blended heritage of its inhabitants. Buildings incorporate elements of both orcish and human design, often combining the strength of stone with the craftsmanship of timber. The Iron Ring Arena of Echoes is a popular gathering place, where warrirors from different clans test their skills in combat. This area is the most diverse, with a blend of both the rough-hewn aesthetic of the orcs and the more refined craftsmanship of the humans.
Stonefall: Located on the higher ground overlooking the city, this district is home to the giants and their smaller attendants. Structures are built on a massive scale, with enormous stones forming the walls and roofs. The Stonefall Forge is legendary, where giant smiths craft weapons and armor of unparalleled size and strength. This area is less densely populated, with buildings spread out to accommodate the giants' size.
Underhill: Tucked into the bluffs overlooking the ocean, this district is a network of cozy burrows and tunnels. Halfling architecture is known for its comfort and ingenuity, with hidden passages and clever traps. The Greenleaf Market is a vibrant hub of trade, where halflings sell their crafts and delicacies. This district is the most peaceful and secluded, with a focus on community and craftsmanship.
