Cartes

Cartes, Kartes, Circumspace Maps, Galactic Cartes, or Navigation Guides, usually simplified to "Cartes", are terms used to decribe a collection of navigation and space cartography information specially useful for interstellar travels. In the last decades the term has also come to refer to the type 7-compatible navigation-carrying devices in which this type of information is usually stored.   In times where Circumspace travel was still on early development, Kartes were slowly developed individually by explorers. These early star travellers would use various techniques and curious strategies to travel through unexplored space while trying not to get into any astronomical body's gravitational influence. In those times, very small particles would inflict heavy damage on ships, while planets and stars deviated courses in extreme ways, often times ending in tragedy.   With time it was theorized that there could be "lanes" where space would be void and matter would be scarse; long stretches of space where particles would suppose a very rare sight. These "lanes" would eventually come to be discovered, and were popularly called Circumspace routes, and so finding these lanes became these travellers' ultimate mission.   Nowadays, kartes are usually simplified to showing systems as floating spheres when introduced into Type 3 holograms, while most navigational information is not shown unless specified to. They have become an item of private ownership, and some information may remain secret as part of an organization's way of controlling others' knowledge of the existence of a system or galactic feature.   While often times some of the information is of public access, Kartes are usually bought from transportation companies at high prices, and include only few systems, the most important ones, while the rest remain uncharted/unspecified. The information is usually shared between friends and family, but some systems' existence remain secret for most of the public.   In the past, some states have managed to heavily restrict the usage of Kartes with high amount of information, as a way to maintain the population under censorship, and some have managed to keep small Circumspace routes hidden well enough for some of them to become key surprise elements in galactic-wide wars.
