The Empty Sea

The Empty Sea is the expansive ocean that encircles the continents of ephonel. The name The Empty Sea comes from the fact that the ocean is entirely devoid of lone islands. The second reason is because of most of the sea's extreme placid doldrum state; the majority of the empty sea is remarkably calm and there is virtually no wind, this has hampered exploration until recently as newer zephrin technologies are discovered and put to use.

Ecosystem Cycles

The Empty Sea follows strict natural schedules and laws. For instance, in elackal harsh storms and large waves batter the entire continent every three and a half years; during this period the people know to stockpile food and hunker down for the several months the storms will last. circumstances such as this are very common all around the world. the sources of these and other such routine events are unknown, several expeditions have gone out into the ocean, and those few that returned discovered nothing.

Localized Phenomena

Many sailors and explorers have reported strange sightings throughout the sea, but particularly off southern Hocier and along the kloskons in Grathil, of small white-blue shapes floating in the distance, sometimes illuminated by a strange ethereal light coming from below. The source of these sightings is unknown and there is speculation abounds as to its source.

Fauna & Flora

The only notable fauna found in the empty sea are Brykens; large starfish-like creatures only seen in the farthest reaches of the dying depths. Their lifespan is still unknown as they were only discovered around 50 years ago, however, the oldest ones can reach up to 60ft in diameter while ones as small as a few feet have also been spotted in nearer waters. These large Brykens have been known to on occasion attack ships, gripping onto their hulls and attempting to pull them down; this has given them almost legendary status among sailors, as terrifying sea monsters, in reality though, this is generally rare and not dangerous.
