Skye Condition in The Chronicle | World Anvil

Skye

"I remember the first time I saw it with my own eyes. My home, my family... All that was left before me was it. In that moment, I thought for sure that I would die. Even now I'm not sure that I didn't,"    -Sable, recounting when she first gained her Skye

Transmission & Vectors

There are two primary means of contracting a Skye, both having to do with visual stimulation, when an individual views something that "Should remain unseen". The most common occurrence that is able to trigger a Skye is a rip in the fabric of reality, typically as aftermath from someone attempted to corrupt that particular point in space. Depending on the intensity of the corruption, these rips in reality may persist for days to weeks, and in extreme cases, such as with Anomalies, the residue can last for years, or may even persist indefinitely. It is possible to contract a Skye by interacting with these rips, either through visually observing or physically touching it. It should be noted that Skyes contracted via this means carry with them less potent, body altering effects than those gained from the rarer method.   While in the presence of an Anomaly, observing its physical form is enough to insight varying levels of psychotic responses from whomever observes it. In most cases, observers will simply experience an irreparable psychotic breakdown, in which the individual may respond in any number of ways, from indiscriminate violence, vocal outbursts, or being rendered into a catatonic state. Individuals with particular resistance to corruptive influences may be able to resist the maddening effects of directly viewing an Anomaly, but are not fully immune to its effects, and in most of these cases one will contract a Skye.   While it is currently impossible to spread one Skye from person to person, there are recorded cases of passing on a Skye genetically.

Symptoms

Skyes are the mortal mind's way of processing the all-encompassing corruption one feels when directly viewing an Anomaly. The shock of the experience is so life altering that not only does the afflicted individual's entire perspective of reality alter within that moment, their perspective is given physical form, which manifests physically as an alteration to the individual's eyes, permanently changing the shape of their iris, as well as its color. Additional side effects may take place as well in reaction to the contraction of a Skye, such as accelerated bodily decay, an extreme rise in body temperature, or other such maladies.    Skyes can take many different forms depending on several factors upon contraction. Historically, the Anomaly being observed has played a significant role in determining what kind of Skye an observer gains, although it is not a one-to-one correlation. Other factors include the Observer themselves, their personality, and current mental state and thoughts within the moment of contraction. Below are examples of some of the most well known Skyes:   Phye: The afflicted loses their entire physical body, becoming in essence a ghost unable to interact in any way with the material world. An individual afflicted with this Skye does not age, and does not have any need for sustenance in order to survive. They are only able to interact with other ethereal objects.   Future Sight: The afflicted is able to perfectly see several seconds into the future. This individual's other senses remain in the present whenever they make use of Future Sight.    Hate Seeking: the afflicted's aggression and violent tendencies are greatly enhanced as all of their rage focuses in on a single target. While in this state, the afflicted is in a near deaf and blind state due to their anger, except for whatever their target of aggression is. The afflicted can detect exactly where their target is at any point in space regardless of distance. Additionally, accuracy for acts of violence toward their target have nearly pin point accuracy, given they are within range of the action itself.   Shatters: The afflicted is able to shatter any object they touch in an instant, as if it were made of glass. There is no limit to the scope at which the afflicted can shatter an object. So long as it is something they can physically touch it, it will succumb to the effect of Shatters.

Treatment

There are no known ways to reverse the effects of a Skye once an individual has contracted it. It is theorized that Skyes latch onto the existing corruption within an individual's mind, growing from it like an aphysical tumor. As such, it is presumed impossible to remove an individual's Skye unless all the corruption within their mind, body, and soul were to be wiped out completely. Such an act is not currently possible with modern methods, but even if it were, it is very possible that doing this to a person would ultimately kill them.

Cultural Reception

Due to the rarity and apparent destructive or utilitarian abilities Skyes provide, the general public often view them as a boon for whomever has contracted it. The greater implications of contracting a Skye are often lost by the average person, and will see them largely as the best possible outcome of an encounter with an Anomaly.
