Anomalies

Roaring flames swirled around the ashen crater as debris settled around the impact site. The once serene forestscape had been in an instant reduced to ash by a single invading force, which remained motionless among the charred rubble. 
Its chiseled, ebon surface laid untouched by the smoldering rock surrounding it, untouched by the destruction its monolithic force wrought upon the planet's surface. As heat and smoke swelled into the atmosphere, the curved runes alighted with an otherworldly glow, and through the pillars of smoke and fire, two warped, purple eyes took shape.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Anomalies are most easily recognized by the carved masks which they wear. Each mask carries with it a unique runes which contain the Anomaly within a physical form, preventing it from absorbing the reality around it. If one were to look directly at an Anomaly's mask, they may see the runes and shapes carved into the mask move and shift unnaturally, forming various disturbed interpretations of real expressions. It is unknown why the mask mimics faces in this way, though many theorize it has to do with the body which forms from the mask's excess energy. There is little uniformity to these artificial bodies, as these are not technically a part of the Anomaly themselves. Most often the mask of an Anomaly will simply travel here it pleases, its manifested body lagging behind it like a limp corpse.
It is nearly impossible for the Anomaly itself to remove its limiting mask, however, that has not stopped others from attempting to do so, be it for religious fanaticism, or other reasons. An unmasked Anomaly has no physical form, hence why it is so important to seal them within a physical object like their masks. Their 'bodies' are a confluence of the time-space around them, and absorb and distort the reality around them at an alarming rate. It would be a fallacy to say that they eat reality, rather the sheer primal corruption of their being naturally pulls in untainted and pure objects around them with force many times that of a black hole. Much like the distorted vision of their mask, those unlucky enough to 'view' an unmasked anomaly will see distorted, incomprehensible forms, which is the viewer's mind attempting to rationalize the impossibly dense source of malice and pure hatred.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

An Anomaly's primary power is the ability to corrupt its surroundings, either willfully, or even by simply remaining in the same place for long periods of time. Anomalies can manipulate and corrupt individuals that remain in close proximity to them, usually for the purpose of causing as much mass destruction and hysteria as possible. Anomalies can of course, also manipulate inanimate objects as well, distorting the very world around them into weapons should the need every arise. This ability is, of course, multiplied many times over if an Anomaly were to be unmasked. While an Anomaly's reach of influence is limited to a few meters while it is mask, its reach will grow exponentially once it has been freed, and if left unchecked, could distort an entire solar system within minutes. 
Those lucky enough to survive an encounter with an Anomaly may often face a fate worse than death, as even looking at an Anomaly once is incredibly dangerous. Those that do not go mad within the first few seconds will more than likely have their entire perspective of reality warped from the ordeal, leading to them gaining a curse known as a Skye, a mutation of one's perspective, taken physical form in one's eyes. In one extreme case, by simply looking at an Anomaly, a young woman who thought she would die within seconds of it noticing her, was stripped of her physical body, turning her into a literal ghost unable to interact with the material world for the rest of her days. 
While in modern times all Anomalies have been sealed away, they too have a similar power. If they were ever to come across a rare individual they deemed to be a threat, should they find them in a weakened state, an Anomaly could inject a piece of their corruption forcibly into the individual's body, stripping them of any power they once had and replacing it with their own. 
Should an Anomaly ever feel they were in any kind of danger, an even rarer occurrence, they can at will transport themselves back to the dimension which they were sealed within. This may typically be a last resort however, as it is very difficult to leave an alternate dimension once you are in it, but comparatively easy for someone to open path from the outside into the alternate dimension. As such, Anomalies will typically possess multiple people who are capable of opening a gate between dimensions, allowing it easy travel in and out should the need arise. 
In extremely rare cases, an Anomaly's mask can be shattered. The masks are designed in such a way that even if the mask itself were to break, this would not free the Anomaly, and instead split the corruptive power of the Anomaly into pieces along with each shard of the mask. Should this happen, each shard would form its own body and personality, albeit on a much weaker level to when their mask was whole. These individuals refer to themselves as 'Shards', creatures born when an Anomaly's power is fragmented. In this state, Shards show much more logic and understanding of the world around them, perhaps retaining some memory from before they ever became Anomalies in the first place, or simply out of necessity, given their weakened state. Although Shards may appear reasonable and are even capable of direct speech, their ultimate goal is to merge all shards back together, and of course then remove the mask to completely restore their power. Although these beings are comparatively weaker than a normal masked Anomaly, they still possess incredible strength and corruptive power, and in this state they will even attempt to siphon the negative emotions of other creatures in order to empower themselves further.

Civilization and Culture

History

Anomalies are the manifestation of the hate and malice generated from an omnipotent being. If left unchecked, these negative emotions will overtake their sensibilities entirely, transforming them into an unbridled force of destruction and chaos. By simply existing in the material world, they are able to tear apart the very fabric of reality, and consume entire solar systems in the blink of an eye.
During the War of Angels, an Angel by the name of Fala sealed each Anomaly within a unique, indestructible mask, before hurling each into an alternate dimension, where they lay in wait to this day for their chance to warp all of reality into a cesspool of corruption and debauchery. Should an Anomaly ever be unmasked, it could spell the end of the Universe as we know it.
