The Moderators

The Moderators were a one party state which governed the United States of America and its protectorates and allies within the greater empire from 2054 until their downfall in the destruction of Washington in 2104.
Backed by shadowy forces in an unholy alliance of the Moral Republicans and the old banned Virus party, the Moderators were the public face of the coup that removed the Free Democrats from power and put an end to elections.
Claiming to possess the secrets of immorality, through infection with a medicinal virus and a complex series of transplant operations the Moderators ruled with a ruthess combination of carrot and stick, holding out the promise of eternal life to their allies and "harvesting" organs from their foes.
They were the last and arguably greatest of the old national governments to retain control during a period when the world was suffering from a series of climatic and emnvironmental disasters known as the dislocations. The truth was that the Moderator's methods were nothing like as reliable as they claimed and their rule collapsed under the stress of floods, terrible harvests and exposure of the failings of their technology. The civil war where Washington was burnt to the ground, ended the United States as an efffective political unit at the same time as countries throughout the world were regressing into simpler and smaller areas.
