The Laws of Magic

To mitigate the dangers of unrestrained Magic, many countries such as Gallica or Oscya have special laws to deal with threats of magic. Most prominent among these laws are the so called 'seven major laws of magic'.

Major Laws

1) "Thou Shalt Not Curse Another"

Curses are a special kind of magic, that have horrific effects on the individual they are cast on. They usually require very specific components to remove them, and if not removed, they twist the victim into a debased caricature of themselves. The murderous remains of curse victims have to be violently put down.
Casting such a spell is nothing short of murder combined with extreme torture, an act so dark and evil that this law is almost never questioned.

2) "Thou Shalt Not Change the form of Mortal creatures"

To transform others, to create artificial lifeforms, to splice together living creatures or to otherwise change the designs of life is an anathema, it is a mage playing god. They shall be punished for their hubris before they doom themselves and their surroundings.

3) "Thou Shalt Not Invade the Mind of Another"

To mess with the mind of others is highly damaging to the victim. Whether it is simply for extracting information or for the purpose of mind-controlling them, any and all mental magics are very traumatizing and likened to torture in most cases. They are only sanctioned in very rare cases.

4) "Thou Shalt Not Reach Beyond the Borders of Life"

Be it creating artificial life or raising the dead, both are forbidden. They are a violation of morality and common decency, as well as being very dangerous.

5) "Thou Shalt Not Open the Outer Gates"

You shall not open the outer gates. You shall not reach beyond the borders of the Brass realms. The things that whisper of nonexistence and apathy you shall deny, and you shall not ask questions that have no answers.
To invite in beings from The Outside is forbidden, or else the war for the future of the realms shall gain another set of casualties.

Minor Laws

Often many nations and even cities include minor laws of magic and other alterations to their legal codes. The most common are listed below:

Untrained Mages: Due to the dangers they present, it is illegal in many countries to be an untrained innate magical talent. In Gallica for example, it is mandatory for any such talent to be taken in under a teacher or sent to the Gallican Mage's college until a baseline of control has been taught to them. From that point on they then need a sponsor or to pay for their tuition themselves.

Magic Crimes: Crimes committed with the use of magic are punished more severely, so as to discourage anyone from attempting the same. 'Assault' might thus be upgraded to 'Magical Assault' and carry a heavier punishment.

Magical Goods & Services: It is usually illegal to sell magical goods or services without approval of the local nobility, so as to prohibit the spread of dangerous items.
Additionally, it is forbidden to sell mundane goods obtained through arcane means unless with approval by the local nobility.
