Falling of the Sky Seed Prose in The Blooming Continent | World Anvil

Falling of the Sky Seed

It was a cold and dark winter's night, the sky beautifully clear as Leandre looked up at the stars through her viewing scope, charting the positions of each in a hope to learn their secrets. While many of her peers mocked her for focussing her research on celestial bodies, something commonly seen as simply a guide for sailors, and so all but useless in the landlocked kingdom of Calgalli, Leandre knew that there was more to them than met the eye. Leandre believed that the stars held the secrets of the universe.   The researcher adjusted her viewing scope, a long brass tube, modelled after the spyglasses used by sailors, improved through Leandre's own genius, and built with her family's substantial funds. Looking up at the sky once again, Leandre blinked as she noticed something.   A star was growing.   "No," she muttered, her breath starting to come in short bursts, "Not growing larger...getting closer."   Panic immediately took over her mind. She had to warn someone, anyone, especially the High Council. Spread the word that something was coming. Something that could spell the doom of the Calgalli Kingdom, if not the entirety of Largitas. Yet her legs refused to move, her eyes to drag themselves away from the sight through her viewing scope.   Readjusting her viewing scope to focus on the falling object more clearly, Leandre's breath caught in her throat as the image snapped into sharp relief. A form could be seen in the middle of the ball of ethereal flame, a form so familiar that Leandre almost didn't believe it for a moment. Blinking and rubbing her eyes, Leandre looked again, the falling form even closer now, forcing her to readjust her viewing scope again, but giving her an even clearer vision of the object itself.   There was no doubt about it now.   Snatching up some loose paper, Leandre began to calculate the object's trajectory, complex calculations flashing through her mind in an instant as she checked maps and documents, the researcher worked out the objects probable landing zone. Thankfully, it appeared that it would not land in or on any of the carefully placed living zones, though it would touch down dangerously close to the Capital.   Shaking herself free of her focus, Leandre rushed to the communication orb nearby, placing a hand on it and wiling the device to work. A moment later, a voice echoed in her head, clear and stern.   "What is it? We have more important things to worry about now!"   "I know the area it's going to land," Leandre replied immediately, the voice on the other end going silent for a moment.   "Where?" it asked.   "South of the Capital, I will be able to calculate a more accurate location once the object has landed," Leandre replied, "I will send the coordinates as soon as I have them."   "Viarosa," the voice hummed, catching Leandre off guard with its use of her family name, "What is it? If you already know about it, you must have been observing it with that device of yours."   "I'm not sure," Leandre sighed, looking back at her viewing scope, the sky above them almost as bright as day as the object continued to descend, "All I know is that when I looked at it..."   "Out with it, child," the voice barked, Leandre nodding as she spoke.   "It looked like a body."
