Ahwalia Tree (ah-wall-ee-yah)

The ahwalia trees are a species of giant trees found throughout the Alfwood.   According to the followers of the Elven Pantheon, the trees are said to be an older than the gods and, therefore, are extremely sacred. The ahwalia trees are used as the base of Alfwood elven society. The vast majority of Alfwood elves live in the settlements build into the trunk and among the canopy of these massive trees.

Basic Information

Growth Rate & Stages

The growth of an awhalian is extremely slow since Iar Bar's buildings and infrastructure has been unaffected by edaphoecotropism since it's founding countless generations of elves ago.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The wood is said to still be able to communicate with other ahwalia trees* and, when burned, a single log can last an entire night and must be smothered to be exhausted. This makes it an ideal firewood.   The inhabitants of the Alfwood only use the "twigs" that sheds naturally or the unused wood scraps from constructing a house or infrastructure within the tree. However, rogue loggers from Gaelndor and the giantfolk from the mountains north of the Alfwood are much less sustainable and risk the wrath of the elves and the other dangers of the woods to harvest the high value lumber.   *Mechanically, a character can cast Speak with Plants without using a spell slot once per long rest but only with an awhalia tree.
