Briarae is the immortal queen of the city of Namilosa in the Darklands, where humans and halflings still survive. The city's inhabitants are protected from the corrupting influence of the Darklands in exchange for their undying worship and devotion to Briarae. Briarae appears as a pale-skinned, white-haired human clad in a pale blue dress, and with a silver crown and sceptre.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
As a child, Briarae lived through the Great Cataclysm that laid waste to the surface of the world. Like many humans, Briarae's family fled to the Darklands for survival. In the following years, however, it was found that the magic of the darklands was corrupting and mutating those living there. Wishing to prevent this and retain her humanity, Briarae delved into the deepest parts of the Darklands, where she found a strange metal called iyethite. By ingesting iyethite, Briarae gained the power of a deity.
With her new divine power, Briarae established Namilosa and named herself its eternal queen. She called all humans—and the closely related halflings—throughout the Darklands to come to the city and offer worship to her in exchange for protection. As the city grew larger and more powerful, her hold on its people grew as well. She began to exercise absolute power, and once there were no true humans outside the city, she closed its borders, effectively making Namilosa the only world its inhabitants could know. With Briarae as the immortal ruler, Namilosa's society has remained unchanging for centuries.
However, the supply of iyethite under the city is not limitless, and when she runs out, she will lose both her divinity and her immortality. She has continually sent her most trusted servants in search of more (though she rarely tells them the reason she requires it), but so far these efforts have yielded no success. As a result, Briarae has become increasingly reclusive, appearing outside the palace less and less often, as the desperately attempts to find a way to make her godhood permanent.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
While Briarae's motivation for establishing Namilosa and demanding worship was her desire for power and praise, what truly drives her actions is her desperate fear of change and death. This fear was instilled in her by the trauma of living through the Great Cataclysm as a child, and was only accentuated by watching others of her kind being warped by the Darklands (though she failed to see that those changes were not strictly harmful). That is the reason she prevents Namilosa's culture from evolving and its people from leaving, as well as why she so desperately seeks a way to remain a goddess forever.
Reign
Briarae originally appeared in public quite often, personally granting divine favors and rewarding faithfulness, but over the centuries her focus shifted to finding a way to retain her divinity. Now she rarely leaves the palace, and any miracles or blessings are handled by her clerics. Additionally, while she was always a strict ruler, her reclusiveness left her priests and other members of the church to essentially handle the city's government without her supervision. While they still uphold her ideals, being mortal they lack the awe-inspiring presence of Briarae herself, and so they have resorted to far harsher and more vigilant enforcement of laws.
Wealth & Financial state
As a deity, Briarae regularly receives offering from followers, and as such has accumulated a vast amount of wealth. Only a privileged few are allowed inside the palace, so the exact amount she has access to is largely unknown, but her wealth is only rivaled by other gods of similar age such as Kozrumon.
