The Sunset Voyages

The Yaalari invasion of Othos shattered the psychological barriers which separated Qadal from Voryndal- two worlds long apart were now united. Voryndayen races poured over the watery border every few decades, bearing with them entire races to strive and fail, crashing to ruin upon the shores. Eshanic masters sheparded them over with promises of salvation from the terrors of Voryndal. None have succeeded in a significant sense since the Axodraharik escaped from Voryndal many millennia ago, leaving thousands dead upon Qadal’s oceans and land.

Qadayen races knew crossing the ocean was possible, though difficult, and the boldest explorers sought to follow these routes for gain and fame. A new phenomenon known as the Sunset Voyages began during this tumultuous time. These Qadayen sailors would purposefully sail toward the sunset, bearing with them dreams of new trade routes and potential global circumnavigation.
“Noble Masters of the Rekeyan, read here my words! I have through great personal expense and danger organized a venture to this place named Westerland (or Easterland to those in Othos) or even Vorydal by the Eshanic scholars with whom I conferred at length before undertaking my adventure.   It was in spring, 3558, that I decided to invest the greater part of my wealth to attain a vessel and some crew to manage it. I was plain and clear where I intended to go. The common Neyasi sailor looked to me as touched stupid. Few would her me through. I continued to travel between ports, and raised my offered rates from 3 nuyan a day under sail to 5 nuyan. This was more than I could afford at the time, but with success our profits would more than cover the debt.   In all 33 were convinced, among them being such officers of water and scholars of Eshanic lore that would be invaluable in such a country. I took the notable works with me- such as Tressonar Syrgus’ Memoirs of Conquest, Xeyesh’s Observations on Eshanic Lights, and many others as could be attained in the Rekeyan. Chief of my intellectual corp was an Etayen named Kastusaur. His origin was in Nathrovas. I shall say no more on it.   Our ship sailed west, straight against the sunset, knowing with a sureity that we would hit somewhere but feverishly uncertain as to what.   A few perished from illness during the time. Food nor drink was enough to save them, and we buried them in the waters.   In the depths of night we noticed things of such strangeness as to energize the crew. It was a flashing, whirling light of glimmering white, buzzing around our vessel as we drew closer to some distant parts. We were unsure whether it was a massive beast or natural phenomenon. It drew forth, and our thinker Kastusaur spoke out to it in such a bitter tongue as no others understood. It responded to him, however, and we were estatic is discover that this being was an Eshan meant to guard the boundaries between Qadal and Voryndal. Incredible!   More amazing still was that Kastusaur explained how this Eshan was interested in our venture, and sought to share a time. We were lost for words. We were unsure to trust such a beast or not, for the Eshan were notorious to give with one hand and take with the other. Kastusar said to trust, and we followed the light many lengths, until rocks and land become more common some weeks later, to which we were told this was the boundary of Voryndal.   I remainded long in the domains of these amiable High Ones. Whatever they gave me I took. The crew was treated well by the strange attendants of this Eshan- hunched things with scales and fangs, and tufts of hair beneath the chin, each garbed with a single long garment at the peak of their hunched back and flowing down to their feet. It possessed no complex workmanship, but the beasts appeared not at all shamed by the simplicity.   None of our number perished during this time, no matter how ill they became, for Asturus would personally gift them with Eshara and cure their ailments. In the third year of our staying, Asturus came to us and bid that we leave. It was quite sudden. Kastusaur, who spoke often of never wanting to leave, was devastated. Why, we asked? Asturus explained that this siblings here were stirring. They had a plan, like the Yaalari had a plan, to migrate into Qadal and for death or success create a new life for themselves. He could not protect us forever if the anti-Qadayen sentiment ran strong among them. Leaving was the safest option.   Just as he had met us, Asturus guided us to the boundary of Voryndal and Qadal, our ship laden with more supplies than ever needed for us who remained.”   Sayok of Loseya Recounts Voryndal Sunset Voyages - 3666
Those who returned from such places, and more perished than returned, were lauded as the bridgeheads between world- Eshanic agents in olundi flesh, bringing with them revelations unseen since the ancient years of the Etayen Ascension. For good example, Sayok of Loseya was granted lands and lifetimes pensions by the awestruck and grateful masters of Neyas, not under some government order, but from a slew of disparate leaders who shared the same affections.
